Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s season appears to be over as too could be his hopes of making England’s World Cup squad as a result of the injury he sustained during last night’ Champions League win over visitors AS Roma.
The 24-year-old Liverpool midfielder fell awkwardly on his left knee after a challenge involving Roma defender Aleksandar Kolarov and had to be stretchered off.
After the game, Reds’ boss Jürgen Klopp admitted that the injury looked to be serious.
“People might be surprised I’m not flying mood-wise but we have lost a fantastic player tonight and that’s not good news,” said Klopp.
“Conceding two away goals? To be honest, the biggest blow in the dressing room is the injury to Oxlade-Chamberlain.”
Asked if his season was over, the manager replied: “It looks like this, unfortunately. We don’t know exactly but all the medical department are quite concerned, and that’s without a scan.
“There’s not long left in the season anymore.
“I’m a very positive person and I hope it’s not only a few weeks and it’s not that bad. But it doesn’t look good.”
Georginio Wijnaldum, who replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain during the tie, said: “I just spoke with him in the dressing room and what the manager said is difficult.
“We still have to see how bad it is. I hope it will not be that bad and he can still go to the World Cup.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold added: “Obviously we’re all gutted for him.
“If he can’t play, we’ll be looking to secure the place in the final for him and the other lads who can’t be involved.”
