Mignolet still not safe – Bogdan told he can leave

Simon Mignolet & Adam Bogdan

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp remains in the hunt for a goalkeeper despite Simon Mignolet having recently signed a new 5-year contract.

Prior to the signing we maintained that Klopp was in no rush to move out the Belgian. We said that the boss would retain Mignolet and look to bring in an upgrade if possible and let them battle it out which is how it should be. Fresh information provided to KOPTALK over the weekend confirms that this remains the case.

Klopp continues to be linked with a few ‘keepers but Marc-André ter Stegen is his primary target for that position so we advise that you continue to monitor credible reports that link us with him. Kasper Schmeichel was weakly linked with us over the weekend and the boss appears to looking at an option in Germany also but at this time we are unable to confirm who that is.

Much will depends on transfer funds. The manager needs to strengthen other area of his team first which is why he’s moved for Alex Teixeira and not Ter Stegen, for example. We are though 100% certain that Klopp wants to bring in the Barcelona goalkeeper but we’ll have to wait and see if anything materialises on that front in the summer. It certainly wouldn’t be easy and we’re used to seeing us miss out on the targets that matter most so we’ll leave it at that.

Simon Mignolet isn’t under threat but he’s also not guaranteed to remain Klopp’s first choice despite inking that new deal. The extension clarifies a few contractual issues that benefits both parties and will help maximise a return if he’s eventually sold. Everyone’s happy.

Mignolet isn’t a terrible goalkeeper and he will continue to do a job for us but he’s definitely not safe, a view that former England boss Glenn Hoddle shares with us.

“It’s immaterial [that Mignolet has signed a new contract]. I think someone else will come in at some stage anyway,” said Hoddle.

“Will he prove himself a better goalkeeper over the next five years? I’m not sure.

“I think he’s at his maximum now, I don’t see him getting better. But he’s still a very good goalkeeper.”

Meanwhile, reserve goalkeeper Adam Bogdan has been told that he is free to leave Anfield. The 28-year-old has apparently enquired about his own availability and has been told that the club won’t stand in the way of his exit. With Euro 2016 around the corner, Bogdan’s agent is currently trying to secure his client a January exit.
