Former Liverpool duo may be on the move

Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle United are hoping to push through a transfer for former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey this week.

The 23-year-old has struggled to earn a place in Swansea City’s first team this season having started just three Premier League games since October.

Commenting last week on the uncertainty surrounding Shelvey’s future at the club, Swansea City interim manager Alan Curtis said: “I’ve tried to speak to him and his attitude has always been in question, but he just wants to play and he gets frustrated if he is not in the team.

“If he is in the team he is not a problem at all, if he is not in the team he can be a bit more difficult to manage.”

Liverpool signed Shelvey back in May 2010 for an initial fee of £1.7million. 3 years later he was sold to Swansea for an initial transfer fee of £5 million despite former Red’s boss Brendan Rodgers pleading with him to stay at Anfield.

Speaking on his exit from Anfield, Shelvey said: “I was on the way to Swansea and he told me I didn’t have to go.

“He spent hours on the phone to my dad in an effort to try and get me to stay. But I had made up my mind”

Sources close to Shelvey are reporting that Newcastle have offered him a 5-year-contract.

Peter CrouchMeanwhile, another former Liverpool player, Peter Crouch, says he may have to leave Stoke City due to a lack of game time.

“If I can’t play then maybe I do have to move on,” said the 34-year-old. “I played 33 or 34 Premier League games last season so to have not featured this season has been very frustrating but all I can do is try to take opportunities when I’m given them and try to force my way back in.”

Liverpool signed Crouch from Southampton in 2005 for £7million. He was sold to Portsmouth in 2008 for an initial £9million transfer fee.

On his time at Anfield, Crouch said: “I had a fantastic three years at Liverpool and I would not change it for the world. I am privileged to have played for such a top club.”
