City then finish 4th above us and make that money back from TV rights, shirt sales, and then they build momentum as they have champions league football, as we miss out based on a reluctance to overspend the cost becomes greater than 15million.

Succee brings profit not buying moneyball value with re-selling value, this is a mid-table club strategy of making profit

we could buy just VvD this window , LB in January and a DM next season within a year we'd cover all three positions with top targets , a little patience in building a quality squad & overpaying to make sure we get our targets and we can honestly say our team should be challenging every season to win the league ,

we can pay extra and be so close to success , or miss out on top targets and we continue in the merry-go-round of potential for another 7 years until the youth develop and eventually sold to club with more ambition.

LFC won't survive long term with a naive transfer strategy that even Klopp wants to change.

these things add up, we miss out on one top target every window , 7 years later we are trying to offload players, we are losing money with moneyball signings . buying one player a window is normal for massive clubs, it's unfortunate to be deterred from a top target based on 10milliin inflation. we'd buy a second rate CB , offload him in a couple seasons for a reduced fee , we lose 10million and without a quality player. A loss-loss ( lose money and don't sign quality) vs a win-loss ( overspend but get quality )
the net spend won't look much different.

I'm all for paying the going rate or a bit extra to get our top targets. But paying £75m, 50% extra on the original valuation, is pure madness and stupidity.

We've been a laughing stock in the transfer market according to some on here and paying that, seemingly more than twice the going rate for a top CB, will make even more of a laughing stock.

@wilkij

Fans think we are a laughing stock to not pay the inflation on a quality player
Fans think we are a laughing stock if we over pay for top player

It cannot be escaped so might as well get the quality in,
If buying value (money-wise) won us championships id fully agree with you,

It may seem like madness to overspend, but it's madness to not overspend on a world class player who wants to join us. Where next season such an opportunity we would be wishing for.

Paying over the odds by 50% IS madness of the highest order. We all laughed when we got £50m for Sterling so what do you think others will do if we pay £75m for VvD?

Ultimately if we do we've got a good player (all be it one who hasn't played for 6 months!) and I won't lose any sleep over it but it's way, way, way too much for him and so far off the market value it's untrue.

No he's not he only world class CB , others include boateng, Ramos, varane, hummels, koschelny, alderweild, chellini, thiago silva.

But he's young, tactically fits , wants to join us, is klopp's top target, and isn't that expensive compared to buying any of the above.

If Barcelona, Real Madrid or bayern aren't interested instead of wondering why not, let's just count ourselves lucky and get him while we can.

The whole TV rights money and inflation is pure madness, everything is madness , but we might as well win some championships amongst the madness,
Theirs no escaping madness,

Other fans will always find ways to make a club a laughing stock , going out of our way to avoid that would only make us more of a laughing stock.

It's just one overpriced signing in klopp's reign, let the man get his target so he can do his job

He is 26 years old so not that young and Barcelona and Madrid (who both need CBs by the way) are not after him for that price because he is not as good as you make of him, i.e. worth 60m and more. This is why I think Klopp is not pushing as well as he knows Southampton are bluffing

I would say the going rate for top CBs is about 35m based on what United and Chelsea have just paid, if you want to consider VVD one of the best in the world with ALL experience, then 50m. I don't think he has proved to be o world class player yet but we can go for 50m, but nowhere near 75m quoted by Southampton

Were selling sakho for 30 mil no where near a top cb

Let's get 30m first and then we talk and 30m is not 35 by the way

They also know that Southampton now won't sell to us. Why have they not gone back in for him for the quoted £75m if a deal with us now looks dead?

Because based on their own targets VvD isn't as important for their clubs as is for us. If anything we did a successful job at putting off the competition , before the "tapping up" and price hike Chelsea and City weren't going to fight for his signature when he made it clear who he wants to join.

So we are responsible for destroying the bidding war, hence Southamptons anger.

What's the point puffing our chest and getting Klopp if we are going to half do things and tie his hands . We may as well have kept Brendan Rodgers and not signed Klopp , talk about saving money klopp's wages are higher than BR so if we are going to make things difficult for Klopp then let's just assume our role as a moneyball team. Get back BR and enjoy mid-table with a rare top4 push once every 4 years

How do you know Klopp's hands are tied? Where did he say that? How do you even know he wants to buy VVD for 75m?
