The beginning of autumn usually means football fans need to clear their schedules on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, as the UEFA Champions League comes back. This season, as always, 32 teams have qualified for the group stages, including 4 English teams — Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
The group stage draw took place in Geneva, on October 1, and, while it went rather easy on some of the English squads— Manchester City, for example — others, like Manchester United, have had it pretty rough.
Still, this article will focus on Liverpool and its 3 opponents — Ajax, Atalanta, and Midtjylland. Let’s take a look at each of them and see how much of a threat they pose.
Ajax
The reigning Dutch champion is certainly a worthy opponent. Ajax have won the competition four times, and are rightfully considered to be one of the most successful teams in Europe. Their successful 2018/19 campaign revived memories of the glory days, and, after they had made it to the semi-finals, everyone expected them to reach similar heights in the following seasons.
Unfortunately, last season, they did not manage to achieve the same success — in fact, they were out of the competition after the Group Stage, as Chelsea and Valencia managed to go through to the Round of 16.
Still, if we take the time to analyse this result properly, we will see it should not come as a surprise, as they sold a couple of their key players (De Jong and De Ligt) last summer. This transfer window, they’ve lost Ziyech to Chelsea and Van de Beek to Man United. If you add Daley Blind’s heart issues to the equation, you will see that they are not such a fearsome rival this year.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t give Klopp’s squad the right to relax. Seeing that Ajax has one of the best academies in the world of football, they might surprise us all by introducing the next football superstar, and Liverpool should be aware of that.
Atalanta
This Bergamo-based football team was definitely one of the biggest surprises last season. Even though it was their first Champions League campaign, the team managed to pull an incredible feat by qualifying for the quarter-finals. Despite being eliminated by PSG, they still managed to impress the footballing world and leave everyone wondering what they will do next season.
Last year has taught us that Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad loves scoring goals — in fact, they managed to score eight times in two games against Valencia. Also, they proved they could stand their ground against much stronger opponents, such as PSG. That is why we’d be willing to bet they are going to finish in second place in Group D, right behind Liverpool.
If you also want to test your skills and try to guess who will go through to the Round of 16, try to choose a good, reputable website that will meet all your requirements. If you are not sure how to do so, you can find good advice online, like on this betting site.
Midtjylland
Danish champions, Midtjylland, were drawn from Pot 4 — the pot which usually contains teams that are not expected to go far in the competition. This is probably what will happen to Brian Priske’s side, as they simply do not have the quality to match their rivals in this group.
Still, even though the club is probably happy with simply qualifying to the elite competition, they should not be written off so quickly. After all, it wasn’t too long ago that they managed to surprise Manchester United in Europa League, so we should definitely not underestimate this brave squad.
