The 2021-22 campaign is drawing to a close for the Reds, but there is still a massive game on the horizon in the form of the Champions League final against Real Madrid at the end of the month. Regardless of what happens between then and now, Jurgen Klopp has done an astounding job this term, as the Reds remain in contention to win an unprecedented quadruple.
Many betting guides often point to the buildup of games being detrimental to a team’s chances of winning four trophies, but the squad that the German has put together has enabled the club to win both the League Cup and FA Cup, as well as going into the final month challenging for the Premier League title. But, who has been Liverpool’s player of the season in this memorable 2021-22 campaign?
Mohamed Salah
It would be hard to start anywhere else other than with the magical Egyptian. Mohamed Salah has emerged as one of the world’s best players throughout this season, and he has more than played his part in every competition that the Reds have been involved in.
Going into the season’s final weekend, Salah is on course to win the Premier League Golden Boot for a third time in four seasons, as he has struck 22 goals and added 13 assists.
He could also be on course to win the Goal of the Season accolade for his stunning solo effort in a 2-2 draw against Manchester City earlier in the season.
His performances have improved once again this term, and Liverpool will need to keep the Egyptian at all costs. It could yet be a famous year for Salah too, as he is among the front-runners to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
Sadio Mane
It hasn’t all been about Mohamed Salah in the final third of the pitch for the Reds this season, as Sadio Mane has enjoyed an excellent goalscoring campaign in the Premier League.
The Senegalese international was written off by experts after a quiet season last term, but he has been back to his storming best throughout the 2021-22 season. Mane has scored 15 goals in 33 games this season, and has averaged a goal every 182 minutes.
Furthermore, he has a goal conversion rate of 23% this term, which is only bettered by Kevin De Bruyne and Heung Min-Son in the players in the top five scorers in the league.
The 30-year-old is likely to end this campaign with his second-best scoring season in all competitions for the Reds, which would have been the desired outcome from the manager after the arrival of Luis Diaz in January.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
It has been another excellent season for Trent Alexander-Arnold this term, as the England international continues to further his claims as the best right-back in the world.
The 23-year-old has continued to be a main outlet for the Reds throughout the season, and his ability to put a ball on the spot for the forward players has become an art form.
Alexander-Arnold could yet end the season with a number of personal accolades, as he is up for both the PFA Player of the Year and the PFA Young Player of the Year.
He has recorded the second-highest number of assists in the Premier League this term, having registered 12, which is just one fewer than Reds teammate Salah. However, the chances he creates per 90 minutes are off the charts compared to many of the other players in the league, as he creates an average of 2.32.
No player in the top ten of the assist chart has made more passes or completed passes throughout the season either. Alexander-Arnold has also been a focal point for the Reds in Europe throughout the season, as he has registered three assists, and has a pass completion rate of 82.7%.
He is undeniably one of the players in the team that is impossible to replace given what he produces on a weekly basis for the Reds.
