The 2021-22 Premier League title race will go down to the wire, as Liverpool managed to secure the 2-1 win that they needed to keep the pressure on Manchester City in midweek. Whether you’re making NFL picks or soccer picks, the excitement levels among fans reach new heights when it comes to trying to make predictions with so much hanging in the balance on the final day of the season.
Liverpool fans will be aware that this season has already been a famous one, and it could yet end with Champions League glory against Real Madrid. However, the Premier League title is the one that fans really want, and they will be relying on a favour from former club hero Steven Gerrard on the final day. But, what has happened on the eight previous occasions that the title fight has gone down to the wire?
Blackburn 1994-95
The very first Premier League title to be decided on the final day came in the 1994-95 season. Liverpool were involved in the action on the final day, as Anfield hosted the league-leaders Blackburn Rovers.
Blackburn was eventually the side celebrating, as both the leaders and Manchester United dropped points on the final day. It was a title celebrated like their own by Liverpool fans, as Rovers were managed by former icon Kenny Dalglish, who won the title at the expense of United.
Man Utd 1995-96
There were no such issues for United in the following season, as they finally managed to reclaim the Premier League title on the final day of the season.
The Red Devils went into the final day two points ahead of Newcastle United, but needed to win to ensure that they were crowned champions. United beat Middlesbrough 3-0 away from home, while Newcastle needed to settle for second after a 1-1 home draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Man Utd 1998-99
One of the more dramatic final day title challenges came in 1998-99, as treble-chasing Manchester United fell behind early against Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal were just a point behind the Red Devils and sealed a 1-0 home win against Aston Villa to keep their part of the bargain. However, United produced an excellent comeback to see off Spurs, with David Beckham and Andy Cole scoring the goals.
The Red Devils would then go on to win both the FA Cup and Champions League to round off their famous season.
Man Utd 2007-08
It would be nearly ten years before the final day was needed to decide the champions again. United and Chelsea went into the final day of the 2007-08 season locked on 84 points apiece, but the Red Devils needed just a win to secure the title courtesy of their superior goal difference.
United made no mistake at the DW Stadium against Wigan, with the title being wrapped up thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs. Chelsea dropped points at home, as they drew 1-1 against Bolton.
Chelsea 2009-10
Chelsea would get revenge on the final day of the 2009-10 season, as they would end their wait for a Premier League title under Carlo Ancelotti. The Blues knew that a win would seal the title as they sat one point clear of the Red Devils.
Chelsea were dominant at Stamford Bridge on the final day, as they hammered Wigan 8-0. That meant United’s 4-0 home win against Stoke counted for very little.
Man City 2011-12
Possibly the most memorable final day of the season came at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season. Manchester City led the way on goal difference going into the final game, and they needed a win at home to QPR to wrap up the title.
United kept their end of the bargain as they beat Sunderland 1-0 away from home. However, the title wasn’t decided until the 93rd minute, as Sergio Aguero scored ‘that’ goal to wrap up a 3-2 win.
Man City 2013-14
This season won’t be the first time that City and Liverpool have clashed for the title on the final day.
The first time came in the 2013-14 season, when the Reds were hoping for a favor from West Ham United. However, City clinched the title with a comfortable 2-0 home win, which meant Liverpool’s success against Newcastle didn’t matter.
But, this season would be forever remembered for Steven Gerrard’s slip, and Liverpool throwing away a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace.
Man City 2018-19
The most recent time that the title was decided on the season’s final day came in 2018-19. City led Liverpool by one point going into the final round.
The Reds comfortably saw off Wolves with a 2-0 win, while City offered Liverpool hope as they went 1-0 down in the first half. However, City fought back to seal a 4-1 win, and won the league title.
It was the eighth occasion that the title had been won on the final day, with the team sitting top at the start of play reigning supreme on all occasions.
