As you are preparing to lay out your point spread predictions, we are gearing up for the final showdown of the 2022 EPL season. It has been a long season with many teams trying to claim the title since the start. We’ve seen some of the best teams fall down the pecking order due to unfortunate events.
At some point, it seemed that Chelsea would be the team to contend against following their free-flowing footballing activities and as they dominated teams throughout the early phase of the season.
Their wingbacks were central to this success, and when the injury season hit the squad, and both starting wingbacks got injured, it went downhill for the team.
They tried to hold on to the top position, but with the busy schedule in December and growing injury list, the team couldn’t, and they fell to third.
As a result, they slowly faded away from the EPL title race, leaving only Liverpool and Man City to face off. During this season also, it felt the league would be done way before the final day.
Manchester City was leading with 10+ points, but they soon hit a rough patch, and the title race was wide open with Liverpool winning their outstanding matches.
As a result, it has been a rollercoaster season, and we would have to wait until the last day of the season to find out who will be crowned the English Premier League champions.
As we head into the last rounds of games on Sunday, this is our thoughts on the final showdown and who we think would win the league title.
Overview of the Last Games
The last matchups for the 2022 season have plenty of exciting fixtures that we look forward to as they are significant to how next season will turn out. We have the relegation battle between Leeds and Burnley, where all three points are crucial.
Then there is the top four battle between Tottenham and Arsenal. However, Tottenham only needs a draw to seal their spot, thanks to their superior goal difference.
Aside from these battles, there is the battle at the top for the title, where both teams would need a win if they want to have a chance to win the league.
As a result, the final match-day of the season will be incredible as we’ll have to follow different matches as they will be played at the same time.
Liverpool Overview
Liverpool has the final day to steal the title from Manchester City’s grasp, and what they need is a win and Manchester City to lose or draw.
Liverpool will be playing a mid-table team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are not fighting for anything in the last game. Therefore, we don’t expect them to put up a fight.
However, it doesn’t work like that in the EPL because teams are out to get three points no matter how insignificant it is. Therefore, we don’t think Wolves will roll over for Liverpool to win, making their chances of winning the league even slimmer.
It will take hard work for the team to carve out a win.
But we know Liverpool to be a team of fighters who never give up until it’s over. Therefore, we think Liverpool will get the win as they did against Aston Villa and in their last match against Southampton on Tuesday.
As a result, there is a chance for Liverpool to usurp the title on the last day as City did in 2011.
Manchester City Overview
The league leaders want to win the EPL title back-to-back for the second time under Pep Guardiola. As much as they’ve not cut it in Europe, they’ve been dominating the league for many years now. The team is filled with world-class players, and Guardiola has found a way to make them work as a unit.
Therefore, we give kudos to Liverpool for putting up an incredible fight against this formidable team. It hasn’t been easy. With one more game left, City has the chance to win another league title, marking Guardiola’s 4th since his arrival in England in the 2016/2017 season.
Their opponent for match-day 38 is Aston Villa, a tricky team.
Aside from the team being tough to beat, Manchester City have to face two Liverpool ex-players who would be looking to do their former team a great favor.
Steven Gerrard would want to play a part in helping the club he spent all his playing career to win another EPL title. Therefore, this will be a tough game for Guardiola and the Citizens.
We expect a full-fledged squad from Pep and Gerrard, as this will be the last game of the season for both teams. In that case, it would be a hard-fought 3 points for Manchester City.
Our Thoughts
We believe that both teams will win their final games, and as a result, Manchester City will be crowned champions, taking their total tally to eight. However, it would be an exciting end to a wonderful season.
