Will Liverpool’s lack of transfer activity hinder the club’s title bid?

As a Liverpool fan, you might take Jürgen Klopp’s lack of summer signings as a bad move that could hinder the club’s chances of winning the league this season. But despite many fans worrying, the club’s recent performances and Klopp’s encouraging statements may go someway to appease the fans. Additionally, let’s not forget he won the Champions League with this team.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Klopp insisted that new players aren’t always the solution, and he’s happy with the current depth to challenge the likes of Manchester City.

Nonetheless, will Klopp’s decision hinder Liverpool’s title bid?

Encouraging words aside, with young defender Sepp van den Berg as the club’s only notable recruit this summer, many like Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believe that the club are taking a big risk by not signing any other players. The former player believes that in spite of the young talent at the club, a left-back is still needed after Alberto Moreno’s departure. Carragher also notes that with the club’s transfer activity literally non-existent, the emergence of academy graduate Rhian Brewster is a step in the right direction. But Klopp will need to give Brewster some playing time, as he’s yet to make an appearance for the first team this season.

With Liverpool winning the Champions League in June and the Super Cup against Chelsea mid-August, it would be silly to bet against us winning our first Premier League title. Klopp’s justification for keeping faith in his current crop of players and not spending money has been warranted so far this season. The Guardian explains that Klopp’s confidence is fuelled by having a stable core of young talent like Brewster, Elliott, and Alexander-Arnold, amongst others. Additionally, star players like van Dijk, Salah, Mané and Firmino demonstrate that Liverpool are serious title contenders again. A preview of Liverpool’s home match against Arsenal by bwin Premier League reported how the Reds won their first two matches of the season. Then they went on to win 3-1 against Arsenal – it was another display of how dominant Liverpool have become at Anfield and put them two points ahead of Manchester City in the table.

With solid performances, it’s no surprise that Klopp has full confidence in his team, and would rather work on improving his current players, than getting players in for the sake of making a couple of signings. But former Liverpool forward John Aldridge’s concern centres around the club’s ability to sustain their form if key players are injured for extended periods throughout the season. Despite a talented squad, he writes that Klopp will need to take advantage of the January transfer window. There will be a lot of fixtures during the Christmas season, including the World Club Championship and without new signings, it might be difficult to keep the squad injury-free and to maintain their momentum in pursuit of their first Premier League title.
