Memphis Depay Keeps Fans Guessing

As the madness of the transfer window rumbles on, rumours continue to be rife with hints and claims flying all over the shop. One player who seems to be keeping fans guessing is Memphis Depay who many thought could be set for a move to Liverpool, as bonusbets.com recently suggested.

However, amid rumours that Liverpool aren’t interest in him, Depay recently appeared wearing a shirt that could be seen as a massive hint as to where he might actually be heading now that he has finished his Ligue 1 campaign with Lyon. On his social media, Depay posted a picture of himself in the blue away shirt of Manchester United from the 1992/93 season emblazoned with the number 7 and the name of United legend Eric Cantona on the back. While it seemed to be an innocent birthday post captioned: ‘Happy belated birthday to Man United legend King Eric!’ many Liverpool and United fans took it to having a deeper meaning.

The Dutch player left United in 2017 to head to France and many consider that he could be returning soon, with Solskjaer having made it very clear that he is planning a whole team reboot. It is fair to say his time with Lyon was auspicious and he hit the back of the net no less than 31 times since he joined them in January 2017, he was also pivotal to his team as he made 41 assists to other team-mates which is certainly not too shabby. The picture on social media was disappointing to some Liverpool fans as they were clearly keen to see the attacker sign up with them, but despite some stories circulating that the Reds were after him, the club has done nothing to back up the claims instead letting it be known instead via the media that they are not interested in him.

Naturally, fans from both teams are confused. Some Liverpool fans have forgiven the Instagram post, with one Liverpool fan saying: “I’ll take a United fan at Liverpool. What he does on the pitch is all that matters.” It wasn’t missed by the United fans either with a fan commenting: “I feel like you needed a way to say you’re not going Liverpool and Cantona’s birthday was the best excuse.” Many others replied with the simple message: “Come back to United.”

To add fuel to the fire, sports journalist Kevin Palmer chose to reshare the tweet from 2017 when Depay said goodbye to Old Trafford which he captioned: “This may be getting deleted shortly.” Now whether he actually knows anything more than the rest of us remains to be seen as there is no real word on the subject from either club although Sky Sports did report with no particular validation that Liverpool had no interest in the player and that they were definitely not in talks. To keep fans on their toes, the 25-year-old Depay then tweeted a picture of himself boarding a red plane which he simply captioned ‘Merci Lyon’, with some fans even suggesting that this was another strong hint perhaps that his next team will be playing in red!
