Liverpool reignite interest in £85million defender

Reports originating from Portugal claim that Liverpool have reignited their interest in Benfica centre-back Francisco Reis Ferreira, better known as Ferro.

It was in 2017 that we first touched upon our interest in the 22-year-old following information supplied to us that stated he had been flagged up to Liverpool’s scouting department. Not long after the Reds tabled a £10million offer to take him on loan which also included an option to buy which was quickly rejected by Benfica.

Regarded as one of the most promising and exciting talents to emerge from Benfica’s youth system in years, Ferro was again the subject of an enquiry from Anfield in March of this year and speculation linking us with him continues to rumble on. The latest claim is that Liverpool have submitted a new enquiry about his current availability. 

Ferro recently signed a new deal with Benfica which includes a €100m (£85m) release clause and keeps him tied to the Portuguese outfit until the summer of 2023. Benfica insist the player isn’t for sale at the present time and that any clubs interested in him would have to trigger his release clause and pay the full €100m transfer fee, something which wouldn’t be of interest to Liverpool.

KOPTALK sources insist we do have an interest in the player but they have played down any suggestions that we are preparing an offer. The general vibe is that Liverpool would be willing to negotiate with Benfica but are not willing to pay anything close to the £85million that they would initially demand. There is a suggestion that Liverpool will continue to monitor the player’s situation as no other clubs have offered to meet the release clause as yet. We would certainly advise you to monitor this one over the coming season.

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be amongst a host of clubs that are tracking Ferro who has represented Portugal at various youth levels and is now considered a key player for Portugal Under 21s.
