Liverpool linked with Ahmed Hegazi – Van Dijk remains a priority

Ahmed Hegazi

Liverpool have been linked with Ahmed Hegazi, an Egyptian centre-back who is on the books of Al Ahly Sporting Club but currently on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

Capped 41 times by Egypt, the 26-year-old has impressed since joining the Baggies in the summer and has started to attract attention from a number of clubs and Liverpool are said to be one of them. Reports in Egypt go as far as to claim that Liverpool have made direct with Al Ahly about the player.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp desperately wants to strengthen his defence with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk still top of his list, but there have been suggestions that Klopp could also move for another centre-back regardless of what happens with Van Dijk.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah (21), RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano (19) and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly (26) are amongst a number of names currently being watched by Liverpool scouts while there are unconfirmed rumours that Swansea’s Alfie Mawson (23) and Huddersfield’s Christopher Schindler (27) have been “put forward” to Klopp to consider.

West Brom have an option to sign Hegazi, who is a close friend of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, on a permanent basis for a fee believed to be around £4.4million.

Hegazi and Salah were recently named in the Confederation of Africa Football’s (CAF) “Best XI” of the African World Cup qualifiers along with Liverpool ace Sadio Mané.
