Liverpool FC Morning Briefing: Gravenberch ban, LASK next

Gravenberch ban confirmed, LASK next

The club has confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch will serve a one-match Premier League suspension after his red card against Manchester City, so he misses Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

He can return to league action when Brighton visit Anfield on 25 October. Because the ban is for two bookable offences in domestic competition, he remains available for Wednesday’s Champions League game at LASK if selected. Last night we could only say the ban was expected under FA rules; the club has now put it in writing.

City defeat: the overnight picture

Nothing has changed on the scoreline. Liverpool lost 3-0 at Anfield, with Erling Haaland (65), Jeremy Doku (68) and Rayan Cherki (78) scoring after Gravenberch’s 62nd-minute second yellow. Andoni Iraola told Match of the Day the first booking was “just a kick in the toe” and “nothing”, and that Liverpool played two different games either side of the red card. Virgil van Dijk said the dismissal “changed the game”, especially once City scored quickly afterwards. BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty called City ruthless once they had the extra man, and treated the win as a statement amid the financial-verdict storm around the visitors.

Injuries ahead of LASK

There is no new club fitness update overnight. Iraola’s post-match comments still stand: Dominik Szoboszlai’s hamstring issue is “something very small” after international tightness, and Alexander Isak (thigh) and Cody Gakpo (ankle) are “not too big injuries”, but with Liverpool flying to Austria and playing four games in 10 days it will be “difficult to recover any of the players” for Wednesday.

Fixtures

All times UK. Wednesday 14 October: LASK v Liverpool, Champions League, 5.45pm. Saturday 17 October: Brentford v Liverpool, Premier League, 3pm. Tuesday 20 October: Liverpool v Villarreal, Champions League, 8pm. Sunday 25 October: Liverpool v Brighton, Premier League, 2pm.

Transfers, contracts and ownership

Nothing new from the likes of David Ornstein and Paul Joyce overnight, and nothing credible on contracts, ownership or staffing. A Sports Mole piece this morning recycled Football Insider, a clickbait site, on Liverpool exploring January right-back cover amid doubts over Jeremie Frimpong, with Jules Koundé again named; that lineage was already cold yesterday. Gilberto Mora, who turns 18 on Wednesday, Lamine Camara and Marc Bernal remain unconfirmed gossip from the same weak sources as before.
