Lazar Markovic hits back at Anderlecht

Lazar Markovic has hit back at Anderlecht for suggesting that he rejected a deadline day move because of money.

A proposed move fell through at the 11th hour and the player opted to return to Anfield despite knowing it is highly unlikely that he will get any game time this season under Reds’ boss Jürgen Klopp.

Yesterday, Anderlecht manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck said: “If he’s not here, it’s only his fault. The president and Luc Devroe [sporting director] did everything to make the transfer happen. They would have even done crazy things to have him.

“Finally, he felt that it was not enough. It is therefore purely for financial reasons that he is not here.”

Those words haven’t gone well with the 24-year-old winger who took to Twitter to rubbish them.

Markovic said: “Thank you for making such a great effort for trying to get me back in the club.

“However, money was not the issue!!!!! Good luck in the future!”

Markovic looks set to leave Anfield on a free transfer next year when his contract expires.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remain hopeful of securing a deal for Sunderland’s 15-year-old midfielder Luca Stephenson for less than £200,000 and not the £500,000 fee that has been mooted.
