James Milner on Anfield consistency and competition

James Milner

James Milner has been talking about the competition for a starting place in the side following this summer’s transfer business.

With Reds’ boss Jürgen Klopp having added Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Alisson to his squad, there’s certainly more competition at Anfield this season which was evident by a much stronger bench against West Ham at the weekend.

Milner (32), a popular figure with his team-mates and fans alike, is hoping that the Reds can build on a decent season last season with the addition of the new boys.

He said: “We want to be as consistent as we can be in the league, get through Christmas and see where we are.

“There will be high expectations of us in Europe after getting to the Champions League final and we’ve got to shoulder that.

“But I think we’ll improve again given the players we’ve brought in because when you’ve got so much competition for places you’re forced to play well.

“If you don’t, someone else will take your spot.”
