Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have turned down an offer worth £1.5billion for Liverpool Football Club from Amanda Staveley, claim reports originating from the United Arab Emirates.
Credible sources in Abu Dhabi now back-up the speculation that KOPTALK has been touching on for several weeks which claimed that Liverpool fan Staveley had again been trying to buy the Anfield club.
As pointed out on this website 10 days ago, The Telegraph reported that Staveley had offered “at least £1.2bn” for Liverpool while The Times reported similar claims on Sunday. Both of these reports, which followed our initial claims, appear to have been overlooked by the local media which has left some Liverpool fans baffled as to why. We expect denials will swiftly follow from them in due course.

The UAE’s National publication now reports that ‘following more than a year of negotiations, the sale was killed at the eleventh hour by Fenway Sports Group’ because they felt ‘that the economic outlook for the English Premier League was such that they could realise a better price in the future’.
Given an opportunity to dismiss the latest claims by the National, both Liverpool Football Club and FSG declined to comment.
FSG were dealt a blow this week when Liverpool, along with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, failed with their plans to have more of the Premier League’s television income from overseas broadcasters distributed to them. A Premier League meeting scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled when it became apparent that they hadn’t received enough support from other clubs to win the crucial vote.
The latest suggestion is that FSG have dug in as they are waiting to see what happens with the next TV rights deals. It is rumoured that the likes of Amazon and Facebook may enter the auction which could yield further returns. The outcome of the new deals should be known within a few months.
The National claim that Staveley, who is believed to have as much as £30bn behind her, turned to Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United as a result of the snub. Takeover talks with the North East club are ongoing with recent reports suggesting that if she oversees a takeover, that Benitez would be handed as much as £500m to invest into his squad.
We stand by the following comment we made earlier this week: ‘The second half of the 2017-18 season will determine what FSG do next. Our current Champions League campaign and the qualification outcome for next season’s tournament along with the next TV rights auction that is coming up, will decide all. We believe they are currently deliberating their options. They are trying to work out when the best time to cash in will be.’
