FSG may not extend Anfield further due to fans’ protest

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) say they may not expand Anfield further because of a fans’ protest that took place at Anfield back in February.

The ’77th minute walkout’, the first such protest in the club’s history, saw more than 10,000 supporters leave Anfield during the 2-2 draw with Sunderland on February 6th as a result of planned ticket price increases which included a £77 ticket and the first £1,000-a-year season ticket. Following the protest the owners were forced in to an embarrassing u-turn and the plans were shelved.

With the club’s new Main Stand now open for business, supporters have been hoping for news about expanding the Anfield Road end. Outline planning permission is already in place for a further 4,800 extra seats but FSG’s John Henry has suggested that the idea isn’t set in stone.

Commenting on the situation, Henry said: “I don’t know if there is a next step because ticket prices are an issue in England. That may foreclose further expansion. We’ll have to see.”

His comments seem to suggest that if supporters would be willing to pay more for tickets, then it would make it more viable.

Unlike the Main Stand, the Anfield Road end won’t offer much in terms of boosting corporate seats and it goes without saying that FSG appear more interested in the prawn sandwich brigade than your average fan. They of course will argue that someone has to pay for the construction, supporters on the other hand may ask where all the money from the new TV deals and new revenue streams is going.

Other clubs appear to have had no problems in finding naming rights partners following new constructions but as yet FSG have failed to link up with anyone for the Main Stand.
