Liverpool Football Club’s former director of football, Damien Comolli, says a number of Jürgen Klopp’s signings are not good enough for the Premier League’s ‘Top 4’ and has questioned the club’s overall strategy.
Comolli, who won an unfair dismissal claim when Liverpool FC owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) sacked him in 2012, says his former employers will be unhappy with results under Klopp so far but says the German manager is safe because of the length of his contract.
“He has exactly the same number of points as Brendan Rodgers after 56 games so they are actually back to square one,” said the Frenchman. “The only difference is instead of been 6th or 7th they are actually 5th or 6th which is not a massive difference.
“I think they will be very disappointed but I don’t think his job is under threat. Don’t forget that after just a few months into the job they gave him a new 5-year contract so he has massive protection.

“In today’s football world, a manager’s contract is as big, in terms of finances, as a player’s contract, so if they want to terminate his contract it would cost them so much money that they will think about it not twice, but probably ten or twenty times.
“I don’t think he’ll be in trouble but they will be very disappointed. It’s 2 wins in the last 12 which is pretty poor.
“For me, the main issue comes back to recruitment and how they recruited. They signed a goalkeeper who is not doing well. They are playing Lucas at centre-back because the one they signed is not doing well. They are missing a couple of players up front and are short in their substitutions. They are missing a couple of players up front and are short in their substitutions. Origi comes in and doesn’t do anything.
“For me, it is a bigger debate about their strategy, you know, where do they go from where they are. Have they improved? Not really. The main issue is that they signed the wrong players.
“Look at the players that came. Three of the players they signed last summer are from Germany so there is no way that anyone in the club will know those players better than Klopp did. But you talk to anybody in the scouting world and they will tell you that Matip is not for Liverpool. He is not top 4. He is not a top 4 player in England. The goalkeeper? Not a chance. Klavan, the centre-half, not a chance can he play top 4 in the Premier League. Suddenly you think either Klopp is seeing things that other clubs are not seeing or he is wrong. At the moment, he’s been wrong.”
