Brendan Rodgers confirms he did try to sign Alexis Sanchez

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been talking about the club’s failed attempt at signing Alexis Sanchez back in 2014.

When Luis Suarez left for Barcelona, Rodgers hoped that the Anfield hierarchy would be able to bring in Sanchez from Barcelona. As we all know, it didn’t happen.

Sanchez eventually joined Arsenal for £30million while Rodgers had to settle for the £16million Mario Balotelli.

Rodgers confirmed: “We felt like Luis was going to move on and we needed to get a world-class operator to go like-for-like.

“We finished second in the league playing a great level of football. Players were flexible in how they could play.

“Then it was about trying to make that next step and for that we needed to get a replacement and we deemed Sanchez to be that one.”
