Arsenal keen on Željko Buvač

Željko Buvač

Jürgen Klopp’s assistant Željko Buvač has been mooted as a possible successor to Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Claims that Buvač has quit Anfield were denied by Liverpool officials yesterday who insisted he was taking a break for “personal reasons” and that he was categorically still a club employee. Rumours began to circulate later yesterday evening as to what those “personal reasons” were but today the suggestion is that Buvač has actually walked out on the club and is preparing to make the switch to The Emirates.

A source close to Buvač insists that the Bosnian is returning to his homeland for a break and will not be returning to Anfield next season. If true, you would have to question why Buvač would walk out now on Liverpool, and especially Klopp, just days before Liverpool’s massive Champions League tie in Italy against AS Roma. The duo are extremely close and have worked together for almost two decades.

It all sounds very bizarre and we’re sure that Arsenal fans would be hoping for a more proven appointment. However, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has previously been known to hire rookie coaches at all of his other sporting franchises in the past and it’s also worth noting that Arsenal appointed Borussia Dortmund scout Sven Mislintat as head of recruitment towards the end of last year and he worked with Buvač under Klopp in Germany.

Jose Mourinho’s assistant Rui Faria is another shock candidate for the position although the media have Juventus boss Max Allegri as the current favourite due to the wage demands of former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique who was initially tipped to take the job.

Although these ‘Buvač to Arsenal’ claims are yet to hit the British media, we expect you’ll start to see them filter through later in the day.

One things for sure, the timing of Buvač’s exit is terrible and if he has had to stand aside for “personal reasons”, let’s hope whatever it is clears real soon and that he and his family are ok.
