Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has hinted at a future move to Spain, expressing his admiration for the country while reaffirming his commitment to the Reds. The 25-year-old Argentine international, who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023 from Brighton & Hove Albion, is a fans’ favourite and key player under manager Arne Slot.
In an interview published in Spanish football daily AS today, when asked about the prospect of playing in Spain, Mac Allister responded candidly: “Yes, why not? It is a country that I like very much and I have visited it several times, and, above all, because of the language and culture it is very similar to Argentina. I would definitely like to play in Spain one day. But today I am very comfortable at Liverpool.”
While Mac Allister is currently focused on his career at Liverpool, his comments reflect a common ambition among players from Spanish-speaking nations to eventually ply their trade in Spain. The cultural and linguistic ties, coupled with the prestige of La Liga, have often made it an attractive destination.
Former Liverpool players from Spanish-speaking countries who have made similar moves include Luis Suárez, who enjoyed a stellar career at Barcelona after leaving Anfield, and Javier Mascherano, who also joined the Catalan giants and won numerous trophies. Even former Spanish internationals Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres found their way back to La Liga after their successful stints on Merseyside.
Mac Allister’s comments are unlikely to unsettle Liverpool fans in the short term, as the World Cup-winning midfielder continues to thrive at Anfield. However, his admiration for Spain is one to note as his career progresses, particularly given the enduring allure of La Liga for players from Argentina and other Spanish-speaking nations.
For now, Liverpool supporters can rest assured that Mac Allister remains fully committed to the club as they push for success both domestically and in Europe under Slot’s guidance. However, his fondness for Spain may open the door to a future move, adding another chapter to the storied relationship between Liverpool and La Liga.
