Surgery fear for Joe Gomez as Liverpool defender continues to struggle with injury

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Joe Gomez will not be fit for several more weeks
There are fears that Gomez may have to undergo surgery to rectify the issue

By DOMINIC KING FOR THE DAILY MAIL

1 February 2019

Joe Gomez will see a specialist to determine whether he requires surgery to rectify the injury that has left him a spectator in Liverpool's title challenge.

The England defender was one of Liverpool's standout performers in the first half of the campaign but he broke his right leg in a 3-1 win at Burnley on December 5 and his recovery has taken longer than envisaged.

Gomez started running again early last month but Jurgen Klopp revealed on Friday that the 21-year-old will not be ready for the first leg of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on February 19 and would not categorically rule out the prospect of an operation.

The defender sustained a fractured leg in the game at Burnley on December 5

'It is not exactly going how we want, that's how it is,' said Klopp. 'He needs more time. We will see exactly how we do it. There were different moments we thought we could do this or that. It will take time. We cannot say more.'

Pressed on whether surgery was an option, Klopp replied: 'I don't know. We will see. It is possible, probably.'

Klopp has been dealing with a number of different injury issues that have impacted on his defence. Trent Alexander-Arnold is still two weeks away from being ready for selection, despite making positive steps, while Dejan Lovren has had a recurrence of a hamstring issue.

Virgil van Dijk has recovered from the illness that blighted his preparation for the draw with Leicester City but he will be suspended for the first leg clash with Bayern, having picked up two bookings in the Champions League group stage.

Asked whether he regretted letting right-back Nathaniel Clyne leave on loan for Bournemouth, Klopp said: 'You make the decision in the moment you have to and then people judge it later. Hendo (Jordan Henderson) did well.

'We all know how good Clyney is, but would he have had more offensive influence in the game? I don't know. Defensively I did not see a mistake from Hendo.'

Will we even see Gomez play again this season?

I think Klopp has known for sometime Gomez was going to be a long, long time coming back and has played down his rehabilitation. Now the transfer window is closed we are starting to find out the true extent of injuries!

I will not forgive Klopp if we ultimately fail to win our 1st Prem League Title from the position we are in now because of his pig headedness. It's stupid sh*te like this where an experienced, successful Assistant Coach steps in and says we need reinforcements...Buvac I'm sure would have ripped him, but now we have Gobbledygook Pippy instead!

He is out of the season, I don't see him coming back now. Its absurd that we didn't delve in the transfer market to get cover for our weak areas.

We didn’t buy players in January when Buvac was here. An assistant will have very little say in anything like that.

VVD must have been a figment of my imagination then, January 2018.

And we did buy Grujic in 15/16 winter transfer window to loan him straight back to Red Star Belgrade. Buvac actually flew to Belgrade to get that deal over the line!

And the infamous Steven Caulker loan from QPR happened in the 15/16 winter transfer window.

Now more than any other time in Klopp's tenure has there ever been a need for reinforcements, our squad has been wittled down to a fraction of what it was and with this Title Challenge we are in.

Should have taken Wesley Hoedt from Southampton.

We have a decent relationship with them and he's gone on loan to celta Vigo. He's Dutch and probably wouldve known VVD from international games.

Anyone but Lovren and Matip

What was compelling in that piece from The Mail was what Klopp said about Clyne:

"We all know how good Clyney is, but would he have had more offensive influence in the game? I don't know."

So basically he's said Clyne is not offensive enough, so Jurgen has been with us for 3 1/2 years and now decides Clyne has been a wrong fit for his style of play all along!

Dunno about the decent relationship after the VvD fiasco !!!!

The worrying thing about Gomez, TAA, Lovren & Matip is we know they are all very vulnerable to injuries and are regularly out, I don't know what it is, never seen so many defenders so vulnerable like that, maybe our training? these are supposed to be rugged defenders, especially CB's

I'm incensed at Klopp's derelict of duty regarding Clyne. He's allowed a senior player that's not fit for his style of play to warm the bench and pick up a wage for all this time. He could have easily been sold and a player who does fit Klopp's style of play purchased instead. It's not as if Klopp has just arrived at the club and is still deciding who to sell and who to keep.
