Britain attacking Russia is not an option. However this poison incident is but one of many there are now regular Russian sea and air incursions testing our reactions. The Baltic states are under real threat of Russian invasion. And garrisons of British troops and typhoon squadrons are based their ready to defend (with their lives because they will be overwhelmed) to protect these countries and ultimately Britain. The evil British troops remember them ? Funny enough there are no incidents of them killing innocent locals in fact as far as I am aware the locals are very grateful to have them there. Quite a bit different from another place I could mention. After the Soviet Union collapsed many Russians felt humiliated and defeated there is a view in Russian political circles many of the countries bordering Russia are either a threat or need liberating. It's very dangerous indeed and the west would be wise to build up its defences certainly EU countries should pay on defence more few of them meet the 2% GDP target that needs to change we can't rely on America forever The British troops are there not because they want it but because as part of NATO they are supposed to, it's not the same as when the British had troops in India for example. Otherwise the 2% GDP contribution to NATO is a bit flawed, though if they have agreed to it they should contribute. What I mean by flawed is that when the US contributes to 2% most of it goes into their economy as they buy mostly US weapons, while latvia's contribution would also go in the US economy. Europe should have it's own army instead of relying on the U.S. Also, but not to justify Putin, the biggest loser of the end of cold war was Russia as they can't really sell their weapons in Eastern Europe anymore, so they are not happy. I wonder though, why Russia wanted Brexit, was it to weaken the EU which has been bringing in Eastern Europe closer to the west and further from Russia? Last, Russia knows not much can be done to hurt them, so Putin is not about to stop.

Vish I don't think the British troops are ever anywhere because they want to be they go where they are told. If they are lucky they get sent to Cyprus otherwise it's probably not a barrel of laughs. It's also worth noting that unlike the Soviet Union Russia is quite poor Britains economy alone is several times bigger. I also don't agree all weapons spending would benefit America Britain France and Sweden all have quite big defence industries and are desperate for business. Assuming neither side wants a nuclear war any conflict would be conventional and were Europe to increase its defence expenditure that and our technology would see off Russia in a conventional war. It would certainly deter them from invading which is a risk at the moment to places like Estonia Latvia and even Poland

Britain's economy might be bigger than Russian, however, in terms of weapons and army they are way ahead. The Russian economy is completely dependant on oil prices which has been relatively low for the last few years, however, as you might have seen, sanctions haven't done much. Russia is not going to invade any country but will rather get a buddy to become President or invade a strategic location. So again, not much will be done.

That's a stupid comment the best way to start a war is to be weak in the face of agression try reading a few history books for examples you will find many

Britain spends about £15 billion per annum less than Russia on defence were we and say Germany / France add just 1% to our defence spending we would be well ahead of Russia on spending 1% GDP of a big economy is a lot of money. You say Russia won't invade any country it already has done recently Ukraine and Crimea. Latvia Estonia and Poland are at real risk which is why Britain has recently stationed 1000 troops there and a typhoon squadron

I don't think Russia will be losing any sleep at the thought of the UK declaring war on them. Reading Mein Kampf doesn't provide all the answers. "

I think Germany and France lmay have something to say about starting a war on mainland Europe.

Latvia Estonia and Poland are at real risk which is why Britain has recently stationed 1000 troops there and a typhoon squadron Either you don't read properly or don't understand, I said Russia won't invade a country but rather strategic location. It didn't invade the whole of Ukraine but a strategic location, Crimea (to have some control of the Black Sea), which by the way was part of Russia before it was annexed to Ukraine in Soviet Union days, when both Russia and Ukraine were part of the Soviet Union. Invading Crimea was easy as the majority of the people there are Russians. It's not the same as invading a country like Poland. Maybe you didn't know but GB did something similar with one of our Islands, ie, annexing it to GB just before our independence which we are still trying to get back. The island, Diego Garcia is currently the biggest American military base in the Indian Ocean. All the inhabitants were expelled from there and relocated to Mauritius and Seychelles.
