I think there is something in these rumours of a takeover by a rich benefactor. I have been relaying this over the past week to friends and acquaintances they don’t follow LFC on the net as we do.

The reaction has been the same throughout. Some have said “I hope you are right” others it has been a slight smile and a wistful shrug of the shoulders. No jumping for joy or punching the air.

I think that is because modern football is completely out of normal people’s reality zone. Yes it would be brilliant (and I hope it’s true) if a rich Arab is unveiled and we can outbid City. I can’t believe I wrote that MAN CITY?? For god’s sake they used to be shooting practice for our strikers.

But who is really excited over it really? and who would swop for the days of the late 1970’s and 1980’s when Liverpool ruled by the force of LFC itself?

I don’t wish to sound an old git. But I think the way football is heading is unsustainable and I think we are seeing a short term era maybe 10 years and I think it will all fold. Don’t get me wrong I would be happy to see the debt go get a new ground etc but what will be our boast? our owner is richer than yours?

The tickets prices for the games are another issue this can’t go on soon there won’t be enough people who will pay them. Clubs like Liverpool and Utd , Arsenal are still selling them but look at the rest of football.

Once the roots die the leaves at the top kick the bucket.

There I am philosopher as well!

I agree with you stan. Football is becoming increasingly un-real in the amounts of money involved and it is ruining the game. Something has to give soon.

I just hope that our new owner, if it is one of these 2 wealthy bidders, has some respect and doesn't treat LFC like some kind of real life Cahmpionship Manager. I don't want us to out bid City. If they want to pay over the odds for players, let them. It didn't get them very far last year did it?

If the new owner clears the debt, builds the stadium and has us running as a proper club again, that would be good for me.

All you said there, including being a bit of an old grumpy git, grin could have come directly from me if I was a bit more literate.
Thanls for saying all that Stan, I agree wholeheartedly.

You just need to watch the big games at Wembley to realise that its a game not for genuine supporters anymore.

The seats behind the dugout are always empty because of corporate arseholes that have no interest in football what so ever but are taking the places of genuine supporters.

Remember Roy Keane and his prawn sandwich rant?

I think it's more and more apparent that all we're really hoping for is that LFC get some money to spend on players. It doesn't boil down to anything else. The philosophy, nationatilty and all other factors that would at one time have coloured our view of a would be owner seem to have been completely put to one side. Football clubs really are now, with a few exceptions amongst the elite eg Barcelona, just franchises and amusements for the very rich.

If a mega bucks owner arrives and deluges a new manager with spending power 'we' will suddenly become 'contenders' and our beloved stars will stay or flock to join. We might win the league BUT if we do, I think you're right to imagine that it will have a very different feel to it than on any other occasion in the past.

Winning the league won't depend only on money because the teams that have the best coaches will still play the better football BUT only highly funded teams will have the best players and coaches so only rich clubs can now hope to win. It's always been the way, some might argue, but in the past the money has been earned by the success of the club and the sums required to be a contender were less astronomic than at present. Football clubs had to be self sustaining enterprises which improved the health of the league and ensured a more competitive environment.

In terms of the Prem, I can't see past Chelsea, Man City unless the other big clubs acquire similar funding. Spurs might come into consideration but that may only be due to the fact that they have a lot of money also but are, somehow, less ostentatious about it. Man United have funding issues not dissimilar to ours and that will curtail their dominance. It's all about money. One might just as well be supporting an Arab state or a Russian businessman. The loyalty of the fans, the geographical position, the heritage etc can no longer have any real bearing on the destiny of a club. The only thing we're really supporting, from here on in, is a person - yet to be disclosed but hopefully extremely rich. It's a bit depressing but in typical Koptalk contradition to this starkly negative and cynical ananlysis I'd just like to ask is Kenny definitely out of the running then?

I think the only thing that would it acceptable for us to win things with a stinking rich owner is that we've actually a proud tradition and history of winning trophies as a club unlike Chelsea.

I bet 60% of Chelsea fans couldnt tell you who Dave Beasant and Kerry Dixon are.

No footballer is worth £1million pound let £80 million.

No footballer is worth 10k a week let alone 200k

Just think of the difference that could be made all over the world with that kind of money?!

hang on. if you happened to have a copy, go back and watch a game from the 70's and 80's. slow, cumbersum and riddled with back passes.
game is more exciting to watch now, regardless of the money issue.
