Currently Lucas is our ONLY natural DM...yes we use Can, Gigi & Hendo as DM's BUT the only one of those 3 you could honestly say can be a natural to the role is GiGi.

If you look at our bench where Lucas (IF we have a full compliment of players) will likely be, he is better than Kevin Stewart, the rest of our bench do not play the DM role which can be a vital position when we are closing out games that we are winning.

Next season we won't be buying the cheap Academy fodder that never make it anyway through our current system (blessing in disguise) due to the ban. So all our transfer dealings have to be in upping the quality of depth of the squad. Lucas still has a vital role at LFC albeit from the sidelines, we must keep him!

His experience brings allot to the team, we have allot of younger players, he's one of the few players over 30, he has CL experience, allot of our team do not have, which will be useful if we get CL next season.

He has shown he can come on and help solidify the midfield, he's a useful player to have on the bench to tighten up midfield with 20 mins to go and we're 1-0 up, or to play in a difficult away game.

He should NOT be used in defense, he is not a CB, so as long as he's used as a defensive CM, I am happy to keep him as a squad player.

His experience brings a lot of free-kicks against us

Every player, good or bad, who plays there gives away lots of free kicks. Remember Mascherano?

Kante of Chelsea currently has 9 yellow cards to his name and just won PFA player of the year award!

DM role ensures plenty of cards...always has done.

Exactly. I always find it strange that people don't appreciate that. Makelele was forever giving away fouls too and he was one of the best in that role.

Having said that, we do need better than Lucas.

He played well against Stoke & WBA, it was Klopp's strategy to not give them set pieces, prevent them, rather than trying to defend against them, which worked pretty well, there were less silly challenges from Lucas to give away free kicks.

Lucas will be a squad player if he stays, I am ok with that, his experience at the end of games can help the team.

Correct, the job of a holding midfielder is to break up the play and win the ball back as much as possible, when you are committing to tackle after tackle, you are always going to give free kicks away.

The best holding midfielders we've had were Hamann and Mascherano, although Mascherano was definitely more destructive and mobile, Hamann just had the ability to be in the right place all the time to stop attacks before they started.

Mascherano was not giving away as much silly free kicks as Lucas, yes they all do but Lucas does it more because he is not as good a tackler as Mascherano and Makelele. They were among the best in the world, you cannot compare Lucas to them, especially now. If he was that good he would have been first on the team sheet
