mmmmm quite debatable that as I am not so sure Rush wanted to leave at the time and I am damn sure Xabi Alonso wanted to stay but was still sold. Alonso alongside Suarez who did want to leave are the only two players Liverpool have had that have gone on to become world class since leaving us... Alonso wanted to leave because Benitez wanted to replace him with Barry in the previous season, Suarez came to Europe to end up with his in laws in Barcelona, Torres left because of H&G and Sterling left because he wanted to have more money he deserved. Suarez Torres and Sterling both left because they wanted to go to bigger Clubs and win major trophies, with Sterling the Liverpool customers view that he went for money is just a made up myth to try and convince themselves that Liverpool are still one of the main Clubs nothing more nothing less, there is no way Suarez would be going to Barca if they were a mid table Spanish Club family there or not so wanting to end up there for family reasons is for me another myth, he could just as easily ended up at Madrid...

Like someone earlier mentioned I think the real test for a Club is when they are competing in Europe aswell as the League, Leicester have shown smaller clubs can reach the top without Europe so this needs to be our aim however I honestly believe if we ever did win the League we would struggle like Leicester have this season as we can't compete with the big boys and Europe too. I really don't think FSG will ever budget to win major trophies, if they manage success then they will take it all day but putting there hands in there pocket to get it is an entirely different matter. This season is Liverpool's only real chance of League success as you won't get another season when the big clubs City, United and Chelsea all have brand new managers at the same time and need time to settle, no Europe too, for me the one and only chance as them clubs will all be stronger and better next season...
Ha, ha, me ould Star-Spangled Banner, isn't it interesting how polar opposites meet at the equator? However Liverpool is no Leicester nor are we a "smaller club". Liverpool is one of Europe's true footballing aristocrats, and will remain so for many a long day to come. FSG are but a blip on the screen and when the time is right for them they'll take a handsome profit and move on. To put it another way the cream always rises to the top, and you can bet your bottom dollar Liverpool will be back there again. I agree Spangles we are not a big club, in terms of fan base and history yes. Importantly we are headed in the right direction, even if we find it difficult to challenge.

Ha, ha, good try there Spangled, but you're pissing against the wind. Huddersfield, Preston, Wolves, Leeds, etc, never had Liverpool's history, nor Liverpool's domination of Europe, neither did any of those clubs you mention have the world wide strength of Liverpool's fan base, which is a major factor in this globalised age, and now is now, and will remain an important factor in our return to the top...the cream rises to the top!

I know that those Clubs never had our history or fanbase but the common thing we all share or shared is that if you don't build from a position of strenghth, let things slide, fade or drift exactly the same outcome happens. At one time we were the most successful English Club, now we have dropped to second, we had the second biggest fanbase in the country now we are our fourth, finishing second was regarded as a bad season now being trophyless and finishing in the top four is seen as major success so if you please don't try to pull the wool over Liverpool customers eyes. I am not saying we are finished or anything like that or that we don't have a large fanbase, what I am saying is we are no longer a big club as such or a successful one anymore either as one trophy in ten years proves, our fanbase is shrinking because a modern customer want success like Chelsea and Man City's fanbase over last 15 and 5 years proves, lets face it we can't even fill out at home. I am just giving an honest alternative point of view that's all, we have improved on the field this season I would just add...

Our problem stems from a previous owner losing the bottle and wanting out, combined with two further disastrous sets of cowboys both milking us in different ways with different degrees of failure. However the club and it's fans/supporters are too strong and well rooted to go the way you indicate with those anemic examples. We will get past this unfortunate phase in our rich history and the cream will rise to the top again.

Let me just ask you this if I may, you say we will always be at the top type of thing because in your words cream rises to the top, why can't other clubs use the same method as we did to get to the top unless you think we are the only ones who have that copyright. If you look at it from a sensible point of view We ganed our customer fanbase due to our success in the 70s and 80s that was the reason fans from outside the city attached themselves other than maybe a few with family ties or connections, Chelsea in the last 15 years have done what we were doing as in winning trophy after trophy maybe not so many leagues and champions leagues but trophy after trophy none the less bringing with it fame and publicity to customers outside of London and the Country they are now I think 3rd or 4th biggest fanbase behind United and maybe Arsenal I think. Manchester City over the next 10 years will probably over take both if they continue on the present trajectory and infilstructure so why if we acquired customers by being successful can't others, the history thing counts for nothing nowadays otherwise Leeds and Villa would still be in the Premier League...

You neglected to put 'customers' in one part of your wind up, sorry post, so corrected it for you. Have a nice day I'm off for a Cornish pasty.
