I agree now is the time to spend though with the extra money from the tv deals, if we can improve for next season and long term.

I'm no accountant but correct

So modest too.

What I don't get is how some people think that they either know more than staff at the club that have been working in football for 30 years or that a massive light bulb has appeared above their head and they've thought of something NO ONE within LFC has EVER though of.

EVERYONE connected to LFC knows we've disappointed year after year on the pitch and in the transfer market. The solution is not as simple as "the TV money is here, time to throw it all at Gotze" (example).

Do you not think that even Rodgers knew full well the players he bought weren't really good enough for sustained competitiveness? I'm 29 and for as long as I can remember, we have more often than not, settled for what's available, with the odd exception.

Even the best players we've bought in the last 10 years (Suarez, Torres, Coutinho) were picked as more budget options at the time compared to who the teams above us were buying. I distinctly remember the backlash on here over the Coutinho (Inter reject, too lightweight) and Suarez (never heard of him, not fit to wear #7) signings, despite the fact that someone with WAY more information and experience has deemed them suitable. It is, of course, a 2-way street. Those same people were involved with Carroll (had a banging season the year before, in a team set up to play to his strengths), Downing (bought for Carroll's sake I presume), Markovic (actually perfomred well for Benfica dopmestic + CL), The Summer of Southampton (still paid too much but I'm happy we have Lovren and Lallana now), Aspas (LOL), Alberto (LOL)...the list goes on, but I struggle, I REALLY struggle to believe a whole committee of people thought Aspas was gonna do much more than he actually managed.

Since I've been watching LFC, we have NEVER bought a ready made, in demand player for big bucks. It's not how Liverpool work. Maybe it should be but at the moment it's not.

Everyone else has TV money too so it's not as if we're in any better of a situation with regards to competing in the transfer market than anyone else in the PL. We can offer bigger wages, sure, but we're not in any European competition this year which automatically rules us out of a lot players, regardless of the wages on offer.

what lol? why are you having a go at me, to try to make your opinion come across stronger? wind yer neck in, I never claimed I know more than the people at the club, nothing I've put really justifies you accusing me of that.

I can't be negative about our transfer affairs because you think I think it's simply about money? I don't, but money talks, and there is the whole argument of the richest clubs being the ones that are the most successful, which I've heard a million times, which is normally the case, even if the foxes pulled off the biggest shock in sports history.

sorry why were people getting so excited, and buzzing for the summer then if you say it's been like this for 29 years? if rodgers knew that players he was buying for 20 odd million weren't built for sustained competitiveness, which I can understand, then we should be taking bigger steps to improving our academy and producing young talents, home grown and abroad through our youth system for the long term. If you can't buy top talents, then producing them is the only other way.

Yeah I know, we sold players to get them but they didn't have to re-invest and according to one on here they only want to sell to pocket the money. And yeah I know, none of the players listed are really 100% worth what we paid.

So for me, the price we pay is secondary to how good they are and if we're taking a punt, I'd rather it be a £10m punt than a £20m punt (Markovic anyone?) It just seems to me that some are obsessed with how much we pay for players more than they care how good they are.

Can I ask Herc, would you be happier if we paid 40m for this Harrera fella instead of 10m? Would that make him better?
re your question wilkij: I think you consistently miss my point on our recruitment policy. It's not about the price we pay, it's about the quality we buy. With rare exceptions the going market value is an excellent indicator of the quality of a player, and I'm talking about proven quality here, not potential quality. I have often said on here that I have no problem with the odd potential gamble, all the top clubs do that but they also invest in proven quality as well. We don't under the current FSG recruitment policy. They're here five years and spent hundreds of millions on a failed policy, pound foolish and penny wise. What I've consistently said is that we need to compete in the transfer market for a reasonable proportion of proven top quality players in terms of fee and wage. All our top competitors are doing that, and it's no accident that with the exception of Chelsea they're all above us in the table. It's long past the time we wised up and dropped this stupid moneyball policy, it's a proven failure.

And all our traditional rivals (Chelsea, Utd, City, Arsenal) are all richer than us. How can we compete with them financially? FSG have always said we'd be self sufficient which we are and they're not going to break that. Even if they did, we still wouldn't have the money of those mentioned so we have to be realistic.

The transfer policy has so far failed but it's not like all our signings have been teenagers. Look at Benteke, Lallana, Lovren, Firmino to name a few that were all established players. Mostly the wrong players I know but it's not all prospects.

Like I said before, I trust Klopp will buy the right players and I feel he has the say on who comes. If you look at his record he doesn't go for massive money purchases but most of his signings have been good. I know you'll say that mindset suits FSG and that he's some kind of stooge for them but I really don't think it's that way.

As the window isn't officially open yet, I'll give them a chance to see if we can get the right type of player regardless of cost (and age).

Not a rumour for us but it looks as tho aubamayang is on his way to city.

Aguero and aubamayang up front will be pretty special this season

Let's hope big Ben remembers how to play football

If we have less money to spend than Chelsea, Utd, City and Arsenal then we'll simply have to sign less tcp's than they do. But we still need to sign some and hope that over time we'll eventually come good.

The solution certainly isn't to instead try and make up for the top clubs' superiority when it comes to funds available by keep (over)spending money on young and old prospects.

how can we sign any 'tcp's/world class players (which players like firmino are meant to be) if I've just been told we can't sign any 'tcp's. surely that's not what you do with a 'tcp'? 'tcp's' which I'm assuming suarez is, are made and show fast growth?

I agree spending on young players to never see a game for liverpool and always go out on loan isn't the way forward, but it's important you at least show an interest in some world renowed talent when it crops up. Would you consider 31 year old mandanda an old prosect, saying prospect implies he's yet to peak, his best 3/4 years are ahead of him?

im all ok for a couple of young prospects as long as our tcp purchases out weigh the prospects and at this point in time we could well do with out the prospects ! imo

I suppose in general you're right. But at what price does someone become considered a top class player? It seems people on here are much more concerned that we pay lots for someone rather than if they're any good and a good fit for the team.

And when you think about it, someone is only worth what any club is willing to pay. We could ask for £60m for Lucas and someone could pay it. Doesn't make him any better (extreme example I know but you get my drift).

You also then have to think about the fact that we're not bank rolled by some super rich sugar daddy or, like Utd, have a massive turnover. We can't compete on the level of City, Utd, Chelsea and to a certain extent Arsenal. We have to be smarter in our approach and that may mean signing more 'prospects' or shopping around to try and find players that fit. Again, this won't make them bad players but won't satisfy the fan base as they're not the mega bucks marque signings that we all seem to want.
