We are a poorer side than when Suarez and Sturridge were banging in 50 goals and there are a fair few fans and respected critics who said our defensive frailties cost us that season. Last season was worse and a complete right off and up to now there has been no changes either as DMF or a CB which is alarming.
Sturridge is not back until heavens knows when and don't tell me that Benteke is going to do a Suarez. So, unless there is some defensive appreciation by Rogers in the next few weeks signings wise, I can't see there is a huge deal to feel over confident about. Yes, it's possible some of the frees and well negotiated signings improve certain areas that were weak but is it going to be enough when everyone around us will be stronger?
Genuine question before anyone spits their dummy on hopium.
We should have a much more well-rounded team this year. As you say, you could call last season a write off.
Brendan relied on his strikers to perform much better like they did the season before. When he realised they weren't good enough / couldn't adapt to our style of player Brendan had to tinker the side (putting Sterling up front, changing formation). This lead to players being played out of their preferred position. What made matters worse was that some of these players were still settling in.
Lovren, Sakho, Emre Can all found it difficult because they were playing positions they were uncomfortable in or systems they were not used to. Brendan signs players that are versatile. But when so many players are being deployed out of their preferred position to accommodate for us not having any strikers to rely on, it has a negative effect on the team.
Brendan will probably realise he can't rely on his strike force as much even though we are still trying to improve it this window. Brendan will also probably know what to expect from his players a bit more this season after we have had a season without relying on Suarez, and won't need another season of transition.
