I also thought so and according to BR we still need to buy a few first team players. We did make a 21m bid for that Brazil forward, but, he doesn't want to move apparently.

You can not single one of those measures out. You need to look at both to be able to see the big picture.

Gross Spend: Here you can see what players have been bought (how many and who) and for what amount of money. In other words you might be able to determine how effective ans successful the club has been on the transfer market. When the league starts you can also compare different clubs performances against their respective gross spend and see how well they have developed since last season, and compare their respective gross spend to that.

Net Spend: From this measure you can see and determine a bit of the club's ambition short and long term. If the club from window to window continues to have a positive net spend, you might conclude their ambitions are falling (being a selling club?). But it can also be that they're very sharp negotiators, and just are good at buying cheap and selling expensive. To determine where the club is heading you can have a look at the number and quality of the players coming in and going out. A really well run club might over time end up with a lot of top top players but whithout that high net spending. That's how a good club should be run!

It doesn't happen often, but MICK, what a fantastic post! I agree 1 million percent! Net spend is rubbish, it is not a good sign of the quality of the transfers at all. Some real quality players are available for much lower fees than some very average players. Carroll and ddowning being prime examples, also Ashley Young who is just as bad as Downing.

As I said, it doesn't happen often, but I think Mick is SPOT ON!

I don't think so, net spend is the right measure and this is why IMO. Let's say we sold all our 11 first team players for 120m, Suarez 40, Gerrard 8, Agger 12, Mignolet 10, and the rest for 50m and gave BR 120m to spend. That would be a record budget, but, would it be fair to ask him to win the league because he had the highest tranfer budget? Definitely not as we would surely end up with a weaker team even if he has the highest budget to spend. Mick is not SPON ON, sorry.

Rubbish! Based on what exactly? I think we would probably end up with a stronger team!

Well if we cannot replace one player for 40m (most people are saying that we cannot replace Suarez for that money, not even 50 because top players won't wish to come to us) I wonder how we could be better by replacing 11 players. If you think we can end up being better, why don't we do it then? Which 11 players do you think we could get (and would agree to come to us) for 120m, I would be curious to see how we would become stronger? To make it easier, do you think then that we should sell Suarez for 40m (the only bid we have right now) and use the money to reinforce the team?

Here is why your posts annoy. You don't think or you are incapable of understanding other points of view. You do not grow from or develop the opinion. It is like a child having an argument, its pointless.

In your example the net spend is basically zero, yet your assuming this information is pointless as you only think it indicates that the manager good. To loosely quote JWH "what are you smoking?"
As already mentioned eloquently by van Gogh, net spend shows an indication to the commitment in squad investment. It doesn't say if the squad is better or worse, but in general when more money goes into the squad the consequence is the squad will improve. Obviously other factors need to be taken such as not wasting money on duds, but the long term investment should see improvements.

p.s.
I know its not just you, but judge a man by the questions he asks, rather than what he says. If you don't understand something ask for an explanation. If you still don't get it, that is your problem that you need to address.

This COULD work if Erikson and Martinez wish to join us and they adapt to BR's system (BR wants this). You would agree though that it's not that simple.

Exaclty.

25 + 15 = 40.

Would Eriksen come for £ 25M from a CL side?

Would we get Martinez for £ 15M?

I do really doubt 40 would be enough to land those 2 players at this point. If we sold Suarez, the price tag would immediately rise if/when LFC came in for any player.

Remember the Torres/Carroll saga a few years back?
