the long and short of it is that the best players are not going to come to our club. we have to buy below that bracket.

for example to get RVP, the mancs paid 26million (or thereabouts) cos they could guarantee a title challenge. we we would have had to pay 50 and paid him 200k a week for him to forgo that.

cavani, falcao and all of the other top talent are in the same boat. if the best players are going to come to your club you either have to be already in the champos league and have a good chance of winning the league, or be filthy filthy rich where you are outside of the champos league positions but be willing to spend 25,30 or 40 million for players in every window (a la monaco now, or citeh and psg (a few seasons back)

That's very true and I think we are all guilty of thinking we are much better than we really are. The team most likely to break into the top 4 is the team that finished 5th. The team most likely to break into the top 5 is the team that finished 6th, and so on.....
Some people are talking a bout 4th place as if we narrowly missed out, but surely the teams that are above us are better placed?! We talk about the big clubs 'and us', almost as if we're still one of them. We're not. Even Everton have finished above us for the last few years. Let's worry about the teams around us such as everton, west brom & swansea before we start talking about taking on the big boys. One step at a time, eh?

Not quite true turnover wise we are still one of the big clubs far bigger than Everton for example. We have owners that are holding us back that's the problem for us had we now got a stadium like old Trafford an developed as they did off the field it would be a different story now.

But we are still a big club but for how much longer is the question especially when they are pricing fans out

If we manage to qualify for Europe the coming season I will count it as an improvement suitable for our "project".

Top that up with one or a 2 good cup runs - say around semi finals or maybe even Wembley finals and I think the season should be looked upon as good enough.

If we manage this I think we will be in a better place come next year´s summer transfer window to attract good players. Still not in the top bracket but surely better than we can attract at this point in time.

Another improvement the season 2014-2015 might see us qualifying for CL the season after that.

No matter how hard I try I just can´t see us preogressing faster or more than that within the coming years. And as we reach the season 2015-2016 who knows - we might even have a new (or most probably revamped Anfield) stadium ready to accomodate our level of play?

I do think to have a chance we need to improve the back 5 which we dont seem to be doing. In my opinion all of the teams above us have better defenders and a better goalkeeper. Even Everton.

I don't think that 'turnover' should be the yardstick with which to measure a club's size. League wins, yes. Cup wins - perhaps. Profit - perhaps (as long as it is used to win us more cups/titles). A corny but very apt sales saying, "turnover is vanity, profit is sanity".

As of 2011-12 we had the 5th highest turnover in the league but lost out on player(s) to Spurs, who had the 6th highest turnover. It's all about what opportunities we can offer a player, not how much money we turned over.

I don't agree carheex turnover is the criterion.

Why do you think the big clubs exist to win trophies ? Or to make money?

The latter and the former is only a means to achieve the latter. No business makes a profit if its sales are low. Liverpool are still in there but being held back by penny pinching owners who only bought the club because gillet and hicks were over a barrel

We just ain't good enough any more, end of story. The stronger we get each year, the stronger our rivals get, so we'll always be one (scratch that) two steps behind them in all fronts, sad but true.

If they don't make money, they cease to exist. So I disagree. Turnover does not represent success - profit does.
