Not a lot of people with some degree of sense are asking for a top 4 finish, however, I think, for BR to prove himself, it's important he shows that he has improved over a season of under performance, ie, finish higher than 8th.
Klopp, the then unknown manager, showed that he had something in him despite having no credentials by winning a cup and improving from 13th to 6th, then 5th etc. This is how you get people to believe in you, not by talking about a new philosophy and not getting results on the pitch.
Of course, I think it's only fair to judge him at the end of the season but I cannot accept that our squad is weaker than 8th. Some people say that the number of internationals we have doesn't prove the quality of the players, but what does then? Some of our internationals play for good teams not the amateurs of San Marino etc.
Examples are Johnson, Skrtl, Agger, Gerrard, Allen, Sahin, Leiva, Suarez who are full time internationals, then we have those who are/have been in the squad Reina, Jonjo, Sterling, Hendo, Downing (I know you'll tell me the last 2 are not good enough so be it and Leiva also was injured for a year now, you can take them out). We would still be better than Everton and Newcastle at least.
I wouldn't disagree, on paper our team sheet is definitely good enough for at least 8th (although without suarez that chenges in my opinion, up for debate though). However I feel teams like everton are benefiting from being a very settled squad who compliment each other nicely, and bring the best out of each other. Right now (kind of like city but city have a team full of stars that get them out of trouble, we only have one) we have players that aren't bringing the best out of one another. They know the system, they get the idea, but the chemistry isn't there. Occasionally we see glimpses of it, but I just don't think we have the players to fit what we are trying to do, they aren't intelligent enough. So often we have 2 or 3 people in the box, but they all drop back, waiting for exactly the same pass. Utd pass it around and recycle like we do sometimes, but there is always purpose, we lack that purpose. These players like Sahin aren't actually doing a great deal, I certainly don't think he's increased his value, he doesn't look like he fits at all, he's not making incisive passes, or linking up the forwards, but then again to be fair to him our forwards are rarely making it easy for him. On the pitch I do see a plan, but I also quite a few players who just don't seem to know how to execute the plan. Rodgers brought in the wrong the players at the wrong time (good players, especially allen, but not what we needed).

This is what BR gets paid for, translate an at least 8th placed team on paper (as you say), to one performing as such on the pitch.

So if we finish 10th with 60 points which is is more points than last season will that be seen as an improvement...

What I want to see is an improvement on last season, if BR does get more points than last season but our standing in the table is lower, I would still see it as an improvement just means other teams are improving as well. Main things for me - Points gained Home form improved If he can do that then hopefully our standing in the table come the end of the season will be better than previous. I do believe as it stands our squad should be able to get 6th place, I do believe they've underperformed so far and last season, with the addition of a clinical striker hopefully 6th will be garunteed or improved on but it's hard to say.

Just heard a. snippet of interview with buck saying that our target for the. season is an improvement on the. 8th position of last year....genius......then then gives it the. Dave oleary...young lads this young lads that.....I'm sorry buck even though I'm a fan, that kind "get out of jail" talk is not good enough period.... he isn't gonna come out and say it's top 4 or nothing this season. as much as we'd want him to. but does it really matter what he's saying to the media? i never listen to any manager when they're talking to the media (maybe ian holloway) because they've always got an agenda; put pressure on opponents, put pressure on referee, take pressure off himself or his players. it's more important that he says the right things to the players. people really do have their knickers in a twist don't they.
