Annefield good post and lovely poem we should have more poetry on Koptalk. I agree and I don't blame the footballers one bit I would certaintly do the same. Note they are not employees of Liverpool FC their money is paid to their limited companies along with image rights. All as they are is self employed businessmen anyone who thinks any different is under a misconception.

Yes I don't blame the players either it's a competitive market place so you can't blame players for taking the going rate based on their worth as defined by the market place, wherever and whenever they find it. However this relates to a previous discussion on this forum when we discussed the inflation in ticket prices and costs of staying at the top in football leagues. In my view it's all part of the boom to burst cycle inherent in the market system, if you want the best you must compete and outbid your rivals thereby pushing costs higher and higher until the bubble bursts, and burst it must at some stage. In the meantime we will have the gradual development of two leagues in one, rich clubs always at the top and the poor clubs at the bottom, and the arrival of rich sugar daddies only serving to inflate the bubble higher and higher.

It's not merely a case of turning down money - more that footballers currently earn so much that they are hardly impoverished by sticking with the club that made them what they are - and in the case of Torres it was Liverpool where he made his name as one of the most dangerous strikers in the Premiership - and Chelsea where he threw it all away

Again, by following your argument to its logical conclusion, Torres ought to be over the moon now he's at Chelsea because he's earning more money than he earnt at Liverpool

Yet we all know that Torres is extremely unhappy and regrets his decision to move to Chelsea

For certain footballers - like John Terry, Ashley Cole and Michael Owen's probably another - it is all about money - and neither of these three really give a sh*t about how well or poorly they play because to them it is all about the money they make at the end of it

But I'd suggest they are in a minority and most footballers - like most normal people - don't purely equate their own happiness with how much they earn

No I agree and in my line of work I have turned down work that I prefered not to do but would have earned me more money. But to claim some are traitors is a bit rich when they are all basically businessmen none of them will do it nothing, nothing being anything less than £40k to £200k a week. As for Torres yes he made the wrong move but then so did Ian Rush when he went to Juventus not many reds fans would call him a traitor though he is a legend.

Rush went to Juventus at a time when no one in England could play CL - not just the teams outside the top 4. He left because we couldn't offer him CL footie. Torres didn't leave the league in which we compete - he left us because he thought we were below his standard. Rush swallowed his pride when things weren't working out, and came back. Torres harps on about how great the Chelsea fans are.

That's the difference, in a nutshell.
