When was the last time we bought someone and cheap who no-one had heard of but turned into a great player?
I.e Newcastle signed Cabaye and Toite and they look class, but we splash 100m and our signings look average.
Sami Hyypia in 99?
Great shout.
I'm just getting fed up of us signing the obvious players for a lot of money, where our scouts need to step up.
Agreed. Though fans would moan if we didn't sign known players who can plug the gap instantly, like Downing. It just hasn't worked out so far.
re Bent. I never rated him for some reason, but he still at least knows where the goal is. I never rated Andy Cole either, whenever he had it outside the 6 yard box he looked lost, but again, scored goals.
I do worry with all the fans demanding instant success and signings, we'll go out and get anyone available, like Bent, spend £20m, and then fans will brand him a failure if he doesn't become an instant success.
