Souness is by far the most outstanding midfielder ever at lfc...by far bar none!!
gerrard is no good at defensive duties,he cannot dictate a game,he is not a good tackler,he needs two very good midfielders alongside him to be effective like hamman macherano alonso..they hold and let gerrard wander.he will struggle alongside the wholly inadequate adam and henderson.
gerrard became effectivly a striker....as carragher said.
hes been a very good player for lfc but by no means better than souness.as midfielders go mcmahon molby alonso hamman were also better than him in the true sense of midfield player.

I would pick Gerrard over Souness, overall Stevie just sneaks in ahead of Souey

Are we talking about the same player?

I've never seen Souness, but I believe he could have been better. But to say that Gerrard can't dictate a game is plan silly.

Cannot dictate a game are your serious? I was in Istanbul in 2005 he seemed to dictate that one from what I saw.

When did I say that only the modern day players are the greatest?! You must have just jumped to that conclusion yourself, because I said nothing of the sort, and I certainly don't believe that, that's plain stupid.

The measure of a great team is how many trophies they win, but I don't necessarily agree that the measure of a great player is how many trophies he wins. I used LeTisser as an example because he stayed loyal to his club - a small club who never won any trophies. He didn't win anything there, but it doesn't make him a poor player, and it doesn't make Djimi Traoré a better player than him. Gerrard isn't as extreme an example, but for years Gerrard played in a Liverpool side that, let's be honest, was beneath him. He dragged us single-handedly through a few seasons, and our 2005 CL win was largely down to him and his individual genius and drive. How you can ignore and dismiss that just because you're older and have seen these other greats that us "whippersnappers" haven't seen, is beyond me.

Stanley am afraid I cannot agree with you on that one Gerrard was an absolute disgrace in that first half as i was in Istanbul too, him and Alonso messin round in the middle of the park was the main reason we were 3-0 down at half time, Gerrard when he was hooked out of the middle started to show his ability only then especialy at right back in extra time. So to say Gerrard cant dictate a game from the middle is definately true, Benitez knew that thats why he paired Alonso with Momo and then after Mascherano and even at International level they played Lampard with Gareth Barry and gave Gerrard a more free role away from the midfield battle, they all knew Gerrard has never had discipline in his game.
I dont want to seem like am having a go at him because he has been Liverpool best player for I dont know how long, but to for people on here to compare him to Souey is a complete joke, Souness for me is Liverpool's greatest player even ahead of Dalglish who never influenced the Club as much as a player.

Its just my opinion of course! smile

Yes good distinction drawn there between those two players There are many more deserving of mention and though I rate Souness as a great player I wouldn't place him above Gerrard, Kenny or a number of others I could mention. I would suggest that some of those opting for Souness is doing it to detract from Kenny and Gerrard, part of their ongoing attrition!
