Both Liverpool Football Club and Virgil van Dijk have been left bemused by reports that suggest the Reds’ defender is on the verge of signing a new contract.
Reports over the weekend have claimed that the 28-year-old Netherlands international would ink a deal that would see him extend his stay while seeing his wages increase from £125,000-a-week to £200,000-a-week. However, well placed sources at club insist there’s no truth in the reports and that Anfield officials are not planning to offer Van Dijk new terms. There’s also no suggestions that the player is looking for a new deal.
Van Dijk signed a 5-year contract with Liverpool when he made the switch from Southampton in 2018 which includes the option of a one-year extension. Subsequently, clubs officials claim that they have no reason to review the player’s current deal at the present time.
Despite the reports being rubbished, we’re a little suspicious about why these claims are actually circulating. It’s also interesting that the official Liverpool FC website has published The Mirror’s article in their Media Watch section. Something doesn’t add up. It could, however, be nothing.
