Southampton and Liverpool could do more transfer business

Daniel Sturridge

Having completed yet another deal which will see Virgil van Dijk make the switch to Anfield in a £75million deal on New Year’s Day, Southampton and Liverpool could do even more business in January.

Southampton are one of a number of clubs who have made enquiries regarding the availability of want-away Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge. The Premier League outfit are interested in taking him on loan until the end of the season, a proposal that you would think would be of no interest to Liverpool.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is interested in recruiting the 28-year-old hitman who wants to leave Anfield next month in the hope of securing a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad. However, Reds’ boss Jürgen Klopp has previously stated that Sturridge will not be allowed to leave as he wants to keep his squad together until the summer.

A cash-only deal may change Klopp’s mind but few would expect him to agree to a loan deal, especially as he is already looking at loaning out Danny Ings.

It has been reported that Southampton’s interest in Sturridge did not form part of the negotiations for Van Dijk.
