Ryan Shawcross would be ideal for Liverpool – Thommo

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson says Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross would be an “ideal” signing for the Reds.

The 28-year-old centre-back, ruled out of this evening’s League Cup tie between the 2 clubs due to a back injury, has helped Stoke maintain 7 clean sheets in their last 13 league games and with Liverpool struggling for options in the centre of defence, Thommo thinks the defender would have been a good addition to the squad.

While previewing the game for Sky Sports, Thommo said: “When Liverpool evaluate at the end of the season and look at the sort of goals they conceded, I wouldn’t be averse to see them looking towards Shawcross as a solution.

“In fact I think he would be absolutely ideal and he’s been one of the most underrated centre-backs over the last five season. You just have to look at Stoke’s stats with and without him.”
