Ragnar Klavan to undergo Liverpool medical

Estonian international Ragnar Klavan will undergo a medical with Liverpool today ahead of his proposed transfer to Anfield.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who can also be deployed on the left if needed, is expected to finalise his transfer to Anfield before the Reds fly out for their pre-season tour of the USA on Thursday.

Liverpool will pay Augsburg a fee of around £4.2million for Klavan who has been brought in to boost the manager’s defensive options having lost Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel. Tiago Ilori has been selected by Portugal for the Olympics while Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez are currently out with Achilles injuries.

BT Sport’s Bundesliga expert Archie Rhind-Tutt commented: “Klavan is a decent enough player with a good reputation, but if you’d have said he was going to move I’d have imagined him joining a mid-table Premier League club as a first choice option, rather than going to someone like Liverpool.

“I think the best way to describe him is solid. Not flashy or spectacular, but I’ve no doubt he can do a job for Liverpool as and when needed”.
