Manchester United linked with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen

Manchester United have been linked with Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, a day after Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp denied he was in for him.

Liverpool have made an informal enquiry about the German international but Barcelona have reportedly slapped a £20million valuation on him.

It is believed that Liverpool were willing to offer £12m for the 23-year-old but that falls well short of Barca’s asking price and with Klopp having to prioritise other areas of his squad first, a move for Ter Stegen could be shelved.

Klopp has drawn up a shortlist of goalkeepers that he would like to target although there is no suggestion he is looking to move out Mignolet, who has stalled on signing a new contract as a result of the ongoing speculation about his future.

If Klopp was able to upgrade his goalkeeper, club insiders report that he would like to retain Mignolet to challenge. However, while Mignolet would receive improved terms on a new deal, it is highly likely that his new contract would make it harder for him to leave should anyone come knocking and that will no doubt be on the Belgian’s mind.

The Liverpool manager obviously needs to choose his words carefully while the Mignolet contract situation is ironed out but it does look like he will strengthen other areas of his team first over the next couple of transfer windows and then assess what funds, if any, are left to consider a move for a ‘keeper.

Much will depend on what happens during the current window on various fronts as to what Klopp is able to do.
