Liverpool head into the international break unbeaten after Alexander Isak’s second-half goal secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory at Bournemouth.

It was not a flowing or dominant performance, particularly during the opening 20 to 25 minutes, but the Reds gradually matched Bournemouth’s intensity and found the decisive moment shortly before the hour. Cody Gakpo did brilliantly down the right and delivered into the penalty area. Florian Wirtz challenged for the cross and the loose ball fell invitingly to Isak, who finished clinically.

The goal takes Isak to four in five Premier League appearances this season. His scoring record is increasingly encouraging, although Andoni Iraola made clear afterwards that he expects more from the striker’s overall contribution. The manager wants Isak to help Liverpool sustain possession closer to the opposition penalty area, believing that more consistent involvement there will naturally create further chances and goals.

Liverpool’s attacking display as a whole still left room for improvement. Bournemouth started with greater intensity, while the Reds struggled to establish rhythm and create clear opportunities. Alisson made an important first-half save from Evanilson, and the hosts continued to threaten in spells after the interval. Liverpool, however, were more composed after the opening period and defended their advantage with increasing authority.

That defensive resilience may be the most satisfying aspect of the afternoon. Liverpool have now kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets, having managed only one across their previous 13 league matches. Iraola believes the back line is becoming more cohesive as Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet develop their partnership, supported by Ronald Araujo and Milos Kerkez.

Jacquet was voted Liverpool’s Player of the Match after another assured performance. The young French defender coped with Bournemouth’s pressure, remained strong until the final whistle and appears to be adapting quickly to the physical demands of English football. Iraola noted that Jacquet had suffered with tiredness and cramp during his first appearances, but regards Sunday’s performance as another step forward.

The defender will now join France after receiving his first senior international call-up. That recognition, combined with his increasingly mature performances for Liverpool, suggests the summer signing is progressing faster than many might have expected.

Van Dijk was pleased with an important win and another clean sheet but urged everyone to remain calm. The captain acknowledged that Liverpool could have performed better in several areas and stressed that the squad must continue working rather than become carried away by its unbeaten opening.

Liverpool have now won four and drawn three of Iraola’s first seven matches in all competitions. In the Premier League, two victories and three draws leave the Reds on nine points from five games. They remain six points behind Manchester City, who have won all five, but yesterday’s result at least prevented another draw from allowing the leading sides to move further away.

Iraola was pleased to win on his first return to Bournemouth and believed Liverpool deserved the result after overcoming their slow start. He also warned that a demanding sequence awaits immediately after the international break. Many senior players will now leave for their national teams, leaving only a small group training at the AXA Centre before preparations begin for Manchester City. Champions League commitments and the Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea will add to a congested schedule.

There was also a useful late contribution from Lewis Koumas, who replaced Isak as Liverpool protected their advantage. Trey Nyoni and Victor Muñoz were introduced earlier, giving Iraola energy during the closing stages. Joe Gomez remained an unused substitute, so he is still waiting to make his 300th Liverpool appearance.

The main talking point is therefore not a spectacular performance but Liverpool’s ability to win a difficult away match while below their attacking best. Isak supplied the finish, Jacquet and Van Dijk protected it, and Alisson produced the save Liverpool needed. There is plenty for Iraola to improve during the next phase of the season, but nine points, an unbeaten record and three successive clean sheets represent a sturdier platform than the performances may sometimes have suggested.

There has been no credible fresh transfer, contract, ownership or staffing development overnight. The latest right-back and Rayan rumours remain unsupported by evidence of a Liverpool bid or negotiations and should not be treated as active deals.
