Reports today claim that Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Joël Matip “in principle”.
It is claimed that the 24-year-old, who can play as a defensive midfielder or a centre-back, will make the switch to Anfield from Schalke in the summer once his contract expires.
“In principle” basically implies that the player has agreed personal terms with the Reds which sounds highly possible. However, although free to sign a pre-contract with us, there is no such confirmation or any credible suggestions (as yet) that this has happened.
On Monday, one of our regular contributors posted on our members’ website: “Liverpool received notification back today that Joël Matip is interested in a transfer.
“They (Liverpool) are now waiting to hear if Schalke will negotiate this month. They have until Wednesday.
“We are also trying to negotiate for Neven Subotić but Borussia Dortmund are proving difficult.
“There was contact with both of these clubs this afternoon.”
Our Liverpool Rumours page has deemed the likelihood of us signing Matip as “very possible” for some time, so again, we would advise you monitor that page for ongoing updates where possible.
A move for Subotić in the summer shouldn’t be ruled out.
Liverpool are also trying to sign Matip’s Schalke team-mate Leroy Sané
