Danny Ward declares Liverpool aspirations

Danny Ward says he has every intention of becoming Liverpool’s No. 1 goalkeeper in the future.

The 22-year-old is currently enjoying a loan deployment north of the border with Aberdeen and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed by Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp.

Simon Mignolet’s long term future at Anfield certainly isn’t secure with the Reds having already drawn up a list of potential targets for the summer, although other areas of the team look set to be prioritised first. Despite Liverpool having recently offered Mignolet a new contract, that’s more about tying him down and the club protecting his valuation. Plus, if Klopp does manage to upgrade, he’ll be in no rush to bomb Mignolet out unless the funds are needed first.

Ward is hoping that he will be given some consideration when he returns to the club at the end of the season and with Klopp also having little confidence in reserve ‘keeper Adam Bogdan, now would be the right time to impress.

Commenting on his aspirations, Ward said: “Scotland has been very enjoyable. Getting regular games has been massive.

“I might not be called on for 80 minutes and then have an important save to make. It is similar to being a big club in England, like Liverpool. It can be only good for the future.

“It is definitely an ambition of mine to be Liverpool’s first-choice. I have a self-belief where I think I can play at the highest level. Ideally that’s at Liverpool, that would be fantastic.

“They gave me a new long-term contract before I came up [to Scotland]. I took it to mean they think I have got a chance. Long term, I would love to be their No 1.

“I met the new manager after the last international break for an introduction and to see what he did in training, get a feeling for his way of working. It was brilliant to get my face in there. I was there for two days, two sessions, then back up at Aberdeen for that weekend.

“The manager seems to have been a breath of fresh air. When I went down, you sensed he had brought a new lease of life, you can also see that with how the lads have been playing.”
