Daniel Agger: I miss Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has admitted that he misses life at Anfield but insists he has no regrets leaving the club when he did.

The 31-year-old is playing back in his homeland with boyhood club Brondby after leaving Anfield in August 2014. A few weeks later he revealed that he left the club because of his relationship with former Reds’ boss Brendan Rodgers.

A favourite with the Anfield faithful, supporters were naturally devastated to see him leave, especially as the club only received a £3million fee for him. A year earlier Spanish giants Barcelona had tried to tempt him to the Nou Camp again but he turned them down to remain a Red.

Commenting on life after Liverpool, Agger said: “I miss Liverpool – we had a really good life in the city, a solid base and had built a good home, and we felt really at home in the city.

“I always hope I will have some sort of attachment to Liverpool but I do not regret that I left.

“When I make a decision, I never regret it. I cannot remember exactly, when I made the decision to leave.

“Barcelona was an option for me in 2013 but when I made my decision back then it was the right decision to stay at Liverpool at the time.

“It is not something I regret today, but when I think back, it could have been fun to try.

“Three or four years ago Spain might have suited me well but that is not how I decided and I will never regret the decision.”

Back in August 2013, Agger stated that he wanted to see out his contract with the club until at least 2016.

“Overall you have to think that it [Barcelona’s interest] is a positive,” said the player. “It is a positive that someone likes what you are doing. When a club such as Barcelona think that then it is a boost and for that I am pleased. I am not going to deny that but that doesn’t mean that anything [a move] happens.

“If a move doesn’t happen that that’s that. That’s nothing I can dictate or decide. I have a contract with Liverpool for another three years and if they want to keep me, they will keep me … Liverpool will always be the club that have given me almost everything in my career.”
