I never honestly felt top 4 was on. The squad was in disarray, we had glaring weaknesses at LB, Masch wanted out so we would be weaker at DM, and had no width. But top 6? Absolutely. The way the season has panned out has only strengthened this belief, ironically.

With Everton and Villa so bad this season, who else is there outside the Manchester and London sides (not including West Ham, of course) to compete with us? Blackpool? From the championship to the Europa Cup in one season? I think not! "Only good at home" Birmingham? Any collection of players at a club that qualified for the CL 6 seasons out of the last 7 should be capable enough to make top 6 in the EPL, especially now that 2 of our traditional rivals in the 5-7 position range have fallen away.

I'll agree it's a weak squad, but it's not that weak. Unless you bring in a manager who has no tactical understanding whatsoever, and who does the job of the opposition by demoralizing his players week after week, of course. The only reason we're not still in the relegation zone is because we are LFC.

as i said earlier, if you take a look at each player one by one then you'll see that some of them are class players and others are decent.

but there's no balance in the team. we started the season with one main striker and we don't got any wingers. then we've got a right back who doesn't have a clue how to defend and our left back is totally useless. in central defence we've got skrtel who's a real danger to the team. soto is good with his head and i like him but he's got no pace at all. agger is always injured and carra is not the player he was a couple of seasons ago.

some are saying rafa got us into top 4 every year with this squad but that's not true. alonso was vital to our team and we also had players like arbeloa, hyypia, yossi, riise, crouch etc, all superior to what we've got in those positions right now.

seriously, we got some very big problems to deal with and it won't be easy to sort this mess.

Very true. But where there's a will there's a way. This squad hasn't got any fight left though. Doesn't matter how they've sunk this low, they have, and this is the reality the manager must deal with. Not "they're not trying, they're not good enough, I'm the only one doing my job"! If the manager isn't going to believe in the squad, to spend the time to get them to believe in themselves, then who will? They can't gain that belief by themselves when they have no cohesion and no run of results to make them feel proud of their efforts.

Certainly we have weaknesses. LW, LB, DM, CB. But we also have strengths: dominating lone striker, sweeper-keeper, captain, attacking RB and CM, footballing CB. Since our weaknesses are primarily defensive and our strengths primarily attacking, why do we set out to defend? Cutting our nose off to spite our face, we are. I'm not saying that simply playing attacking football, and pressing the opposition the way Arsenal demonstrated against Chelsea this week will solve all our problems, but it will go some way to improving our results, improving our morale, and helping the fans believe again.

If you believe something it can become reality, but right now nobody involved with LFC believes positive things, and therefore only negative beliefs are being realized.

Can't agree there emp I'm afraid. I think with a better manager we have a fine squad.

REINA: He's being shown up by the defence so I don't agree that he's having a terrible season, if the defence were better he'd be as good as he's always been, there's still not many better in the Premier League than him (I thought he was off his line quite quickly tonight, just a bit unlucky).

KELLY: Class young player, great potential, will be one of the great Liverpool players if nurtured by the right management.

CARRA: NOT to be written off yet. Still too much experience to offer and will be fine with the right partner.

AGGER: Class act, perfect partner for Carra. Needs a run of games.

JOHNSON: Brilliant attacking instincts, makes us much more dynamic when he plays well. Not brilliant defensively but still a quality player. Needs a change of manager to bring out the best in him.

MAXI: Limited but can do a job until the summer.

GERRARD: Best LFC player ever. Liverpool fans are starting to take him for granted I think. Needs a better manager to get his mojo back.

MEIRELES: Quality player, needs to plays centrally though.

COLE: Def. has the ability, needs a better manager to get his mojo back like Gerrard.

TORRES: Potentially could be the best player ever to wear the jersey but is mentally fragile at moment. Needs a better manager to get his mojo back.

KUYT: World Cup winner. A true team player, don't dismiss him as a donkey, has so much more to offer the team.

i agree that we have some good players, and a new manager would freshen things up but when did kuyt become a world cup winner?

kuyt can play football, better than the majority of the Bolton and Blackpool teams that are performing so well. The squad is not strong but it's not THIS bad.

The tactics and motivation are wrong and lost. The mood everywhere has gotten worse even though H&G have gone: at least with anger there's fight.

Said it before but Roy is making it easy for Henry to sack him. He's isolated, powerless and under-performing. His agent will be in today to discuss a severance package.

Bye-bye Roy but please no talk of Rafa or even Kenny. Hiddink or Coyle.....

This is exactly my point. We have a squad of average-decent players, with a few (ok, 3) true stars. We have other problems with balance (eg we are poor in every position on the left). But all of these people are current internationals, most of them first choice in their position. They can play; anyone who is the best in his country is a decent footballer. But playing isn't enough, as I think you've finally realized, emp. They have to be managed too; motivated, guided, deployed with tactics fitting the ability of the squad. Do you think it's an accident that the current Man U squad is also their weakest in a great period of time, but they're still challenging for the title, unbeaten at home? That shows the vast gulf in ability between a quality manager and Roy.

Worse than the Blackpool game!

Players must take SOME blame , greek had a rare bad game , no midfield , Torres was missing ...

How about refunding the fans their ticket price as Liverpool didn't turn up.

All this talk that our squad isn't good enough is true to some part. But with a different manager we will be better. Probably not good enough for the top 4 again but much better than we are at the moment. We are only 3 points from the drop zone and I don't see us getting anything out of Bolton next.

If they sack Roy and put anyone else in, it will freshen things up. Thats what a new manager should always be able to do but Roy hasn't. He is just using the same players, out of possition as Rafa was. The players didn't like it then and they like it less now as Roy has no idea of tactics. Weather the players liked playing for Rafa, they were playing for one of the best regarded managers of the time with quite modern methods. Now they have been taken to the 70's with Roy. No wonder they aren't playing or respect him.

I wonder when the lads will turn up at Anfield wearing these amasing jerseys?! eek

70's shirts

'Modern Times Roy' should have introduced them already in July! Then we would have had a totally different outlook anyway! wink
