Im not sure its the best idea in the world TBH and I doubt he would be able to work within the new system which the new owners seem to want to employ.

That said if it was a chance between him or Roy then it would be no contest. Rafa has a proven record of success and is obviously a very good manager where as Hodgeson despite being far far older hasnt achieved anywhere near that or anything much above averageness.

I must say I though otherwise before Roy took the Liverpool job -but Rafa also come across as a far nicer bloke and someone id rather manager Liverpool than the negative, defensive aura of Hodgeson.

I dont think taking Rafa back is the way forward but I would take anyone over Hodgeson..

I would struggle to think of anyone that I would not take over Hodgeson - maybe Fat Sam but even then im sure he would be doing a better job and couldnt have us playing an worse football although there is no doubt he is a bigger [oops].

Do you not remember the dull, defensive and mind boggling approach to each game?

The fact that his players even questioned his decsisions as he slowly lost the plot.

He has proved at Inter (after inheriting the Italian Champions and Champions League side), what we all knew, that his ego is just one peg below that of Mourinho, with approx 25% of Jose's ability to get the bext out of his players.

He is like a broken record - if I dont get the money to spend on players etc etc, he has just proved that he can not manage or build a side without having a limitless pot of cash.

Although Roy is not the man for Liverpool, to go back for Rafa would be the biggest mistake Liverpool could do and would alienate millions of fans, whilst making a few thousand happy, those who pine for the days we won the Champions League (once again with an inherited side) and the FA Cup one year later.

Tis the season to be jolly, but lets not get silly, we should be looking forward, not backward!!

Happy Christmas Rafa - and Blackburn are looking for a Manager by the way if you are reading this Rafa!!

Since his sacking Rafa Benitez has been a cult favourite to topple Roy over the throne, however if the club is going to progress and compete with the new breed of the "big four" looking back to a manager that has just been sacked is most definately not the answer. Yes we are going nowhere with Roy and we never will do, however he will stay at least until the end of this season and there are so many more better options than Rafa. Roy is not the answer and so isnt Rafa, its up to the chairmen or whoever to find a suitible replacement that plays progressive and competitive football e.g Boas, Magath and maybe even Owen Coyle. That is all, sorry for being controversial

That would be a bad reason to take back an ex, yes. But there are good reasons to get back together with an ex too. It doesn't really work as an analogy though (what would the new owners represent?).

With managers I think it just comes down to "do we have the best we can get?" I don't think we should have sacked Rafa in the first place, not because he was perfect and everything was wonderful with him (he isn't and it wasn't), but because we replaced him with Roy who just is not as good (judging both by his historical record and his performance in the job).

Similarly, if we were to sack Roy, we should only be doing so only if there is a better alternative available (which there is... though there's also an argument to not sack him if there are yet more options only likely to be available in the summer).

Not sure if its the way forward but would be worth it just to see emp's posts!

I think under different circumstances we could have done some more great things under Rafa but he lost the plot and was rightly sacked. He is 10 times the manager Roy is but its not the way forward.

Interestingly enough we're in a brand new state. Rafa wouldnt buy who he wants since we got Commili for that and the owners who have made it clear we want to rebuild. So there would be no "Rafa Purchases" and you hit the marker threadstarter in saying Rafa attracts World Class names which he does, i can see Rafa turning young Pacheco into a superstar, and hopefully bring in some more Spanish stars, Rafas gotta good relationship with Mata. Hmmm?!

Uhmm you mean the Pacheco he hardly ever played in his last season? The Pacheco who sat on the bench in the final game while some unknown 16 year old came on as the final substitute instead of him? I'd have felt insulted if I was Pacheco.

I dont want Rafa back. Ever.

Wait until the summer then better managers will be available.

Rafa getting abuse from people that should know better. Rafa getting slagged off because 'he's coldhearted, selfish, doesn't care' and the rest. From those that were so blinkered, stupid, petty and sad that their rage led them to believe anyone could do a better job and that he was a horrible person.
Then he donates all that money to the HJC. Then he donates to Alder Heys. Then he donates to other causes close to his families hearts. Then he says how much he loves the place and loves the club even though he was stabbed in the back. Admits he's made mistakes. Says he would love to come back one day. Gives us the Champions League and gets us to another final. Batters Real Madrid and Manchester United 4-1. Beats Barcelona on their own patch. Makes us feared throughout Europe. Gives us an FA Cup. Takes us to finals. Makes us believe. Makes us Dream. Makes us proud. Makes us spoilt with it all. Has us playing, controlling pressing football all over the pitch. Breaks scoring and points records and yet is labelled 'boring' by the seething, jealous press. The press hate him. The press really, really hate him. As a Liverpool fan - anyone that is hated by the lying Murdoch-led, Sun-oriented, money-spinning, self-serving, Xenophobic/Borderline Racist, Dumbed-Down, lying, crying press machine is a friend of mine. Gets the Club. Gets the City. Gets the Fans. Gets the Tradition. Gets the honour. Is one of us.
