Of the players: Poulsen and Babel are the only two I never want to see in LFC red again. The others, while perhaps not the absolute best, at least have some merit. Kuyt (tireless, works hard for the team, always gives 100% - these attributes are rare in the modern footballer, so that makes him a fantastic squad player), Lucas (also always gives 100%, has the odd fantastic game, only known quantity at DM in the squad), Konchesky (PFK jokes aside he's a decent enough squad player in a position where we have no one [not first choice, so I still have reservations about signing him, but now that we have him I wouldn't say 'get rid' just yet), Maxi (last season he wasn't the rubbish player he'd been until this weekend, which simply suggests he was being managed incorrectly).
I will agree that we have a team that is mainly people who are only really good as squad players (ie used in rotation, weaker league teams, cup games against weaker sides or if we've already won on the strength of the first leg), but that doesn't mean we need a fire sale. In Jan we need to go all out for top signings - left winger, LB. I'm going to say it again, we don't need another striker, especially if it's Carlton Cole (between N'Gog, Kuyt and Jovanovic we have cover of similar enough quality, but these players [or at least the first two anyway] will die for the shirt).
My first order of business would be to get Insua back. If Johnson is good enough on the right, then he is definitely good enough on the left (just don't play them together if we expect the opposition to compete on the flanks). I'd take his assists over Johnson any day, especially since we have Kelly.
Speaking of loans - I would then either sell or request the return of Aquilani (and then put the guy on the pitch all the time). Between Cole, Gerrard, Meireles, Aquaman, Shelvey, and Suso we would have a formidable central midfield unit of depth and youth.
