Poulsen, Lucas and Spearing (and Mascherano before them) are too one-dimensional to be of any great value. They can defend (allegedly) but that's it. At least Masch has some pace. Compare them with the likes of Alonso, Hamann and McMahon, who as well as doing the main job well, could and would go forward, scored goals and were creative too. There's a massive difference between us now and in previous seasons.

Our DMs today are not just one-dimensional, they're damn lazy as well. Someone should track how much poulsen runs. Most of the time he stays between the center circle and the penalty box. And he jogs around that small area like that's all he's supposed to do. No forays up front, no invention, no pressing, just laziness. The way he's playing is killing the team. We've become a stoke or wolves overnight because of him.

Gerrard and Meireles could do the job just fine in a 4-4-2, but they need some of the creative pressure off them, and that will take wingers and another striker.

Rafarendum, you took the thoughts right out of my mind. I think those midfield combos would work a treat. I think SG & Raul are fitting in well together. Would like to see Pacheco get a run of games alongside Nando, see if they gel. And you're so right about the need for proper, quality wingers, like Barnes, Heighway and Thompson (for those of us old enough to remember him!). Never since Barnes have we had a winger who is good enough and a proper, recognised, natural winger.

the problem is lucas, poulsen, skrtel, carragher bein too old, babel not doing much for us at all, torres sulking, gerrard getting frustrated with lack of quality around him, joe cole i persoanlly think is good enough to stay in the squad, ngog altho his heart is in the right place he doesnt have that outstanding ability we need, konchesky is [oops], auerlio never plays he might aswell retire, glen johnson is at times decent going forward, [oops] at defending and sometimes when he does attack he loses the ball which leaves us vulnerable, pacheco not getting a chance to show us what he can do, and ROY HODGSON

There's nothing with wrong with our CM's but we need width and that is one thing we have lacked in the last 15 years....

Back in the days, successful teams would have a "perro de guerra" or dog of war or even the "water carrier". These days the dogs of war are required to be able to tackle, defend, attack, contribute with goals, and distribute to the creative players.

Chelsea seem to have the best two in Essien and Obi Mikel (i have watched him this season and he has improved heaps). Pirlo is a great but aging player who may not have the legs to keep up with the younger and faster ones. Mascherano, one of the best wanted to leave. Spain have Xabi, Xavi, Cesc and Iniesta - enough said.

The ones that can actually improve us at this time would be Lassana Diarra but would he come to Liverpool? I would also like to make a case for two African players who really impressed in the World Cup and will only get better - Anthony Annan (Ghana and Rosenberg) and Haruna Lukman (Nigeria - AS Monaco).

Annan would be a very useful addition. I'm surprised with all of Roy's contacts and scouts in Scandanavia, no one pushed Annan to him.

Annan would be a good signing. Watched him last night and looked OK. He does look very small though, maybe its just the TV but if you're good enogh, you big enough.

I agree with others on here though. Between Gerrard, Raul and Cole we should be well covered in the middle. Gerrard and Raul could do the sitting duties and can both get forward with Cole behind Torres. They could also work in a 442 formation. But as Redlaz says, we need some width and pace.
