ireland 2 Russia 3
balls anyway. we were off the pace and nothin bounced for us. meanwhile everything russia did went in. thought we deserved a draw, would have got it with a little more luck. that said, only ourselves to blame.
however, something is really pissng me off about irish fans these days. the usual head calling ensued after fridays defeat... "trapatonni's not the right man for the job", "we're too defensive" "he wont let us play on the deck" "lets get someone better in": all idiotic comments and here's why....
a. we're a team of average to good players. we are not brazil and we never will be.
b. A BETTER manager? who's going to pay for that? the FAI? you must be joking. they couldnt even afford the CURRENT manager,. an independant business man had to subsidise traps wages. The fai gave us staunton ffs, we all wanted a top manager, we got one. but we are still ireland, we are still limited and nothing will change that.
back in the days of charlton i loved the fact that we just supported, wished, prayed, willed etc. whatever it took to get us over the line. now for some reason everyone is a deluded expert, with their nose out of joint because we are not playing our usual total football! far from the beautiful game we were reared, and dont forget it.
so just a little reminder to disgruntled irish fans to remember that one of our crowning glories was beating england in stuttgart '88(sorry to all england supporters for bringing this up) and in that game we scored a goal and then defended for three days and we cheered them every step of the way. thats who we are. underdogs. christ knows this country needs to qualify for the finals so a little more honest support and a little less snobbery i think is in order.
