Houllier is a nice man and a good manager. He came back way too soon when he was ill and it clearly affected his decsion making. Regardless of some of the bad signings, he DID leave the club on nice terms AND in 4th place. Benitez wouldn't have won the CL if Houllier hadn't have managed this the season before. Just remember that. Beats 7th eh? I thought it was his heart he had the problems with not his head when it came to making decisions. Am sorry there is no way you can blame buying Diouf, Cheyroux and Salif Diao and getting shut of Anelka on his health it was just down to poor management purely and simply, awful manager who stayed far to long with us.

he signed hyypia, made gerrard captain, won us quite a few trophies, i hold houllier in high regard no matter of the [oops] decisions he made at the end of his reign.

Houllier did some good things no arguing on that fact it's just the bad far outweighed the good, Big Sami has been the best centre half by a mile since Jocky but I totaly disagree about Gerrard being a good captain. The way Big Sami was treated when the captainship was taken away from him was disgraceful only for the fact Big Sami is ultra professional we got away with keeping the big Fin because lets face it if it had been the other way around and it was taken of Gerrard he would of cried like the baby he is and would probably of left the club. The three cups were very nice but come on lets look at it in a bit more depth, we were very lucky to of beaten a first division club like Birmingham in the league Cup on penalties, we got murdered in the Cup Final against Arsenal only for Henchoz playing in goal and the less said about the game against Alvez the better as we were a disgrace in the final conceding four goals against a very very mediocre Spanish team who were there just to enjoy a day out. The most important thing about that season was we were out of the league before xmas which in turn enabled us to concentrate on winning cups and sacrifycing the rest of the league campagn up to an extent, it was a good season up to a point but none of the trophies won carried that much weight in the grand scale of things not like United's treble a season or so before.

I thought it was his heart he had the problems with not his head when it came to making decisions. Am sorry there is no way you can blame buying Diouf, Cheyroux and Salif Diao and getting shut of Anelka on his health it was just down to poor management purely and simply, awful manager who stayed far to long with us. he made some big mistakes and i agree it's was well about time for him to leave but the players you mentioned were not any worse than aquilani, dossena, josemi etc. and just like rafa had his fair share of success on the transfer market (alonso, torres, reina etc) so did ged too signing hyypia, henchoz, gary macca etc. good luck at villa!
