As it stands now, Rafa seems to be able to cash in on Mascherano and Alonso, for 60m or more. adding to that what ever we can generate from the sale of Arbeloa, Leto and others, we will be closer to a staggering 70m transfer kit. we might not use the whole 70, but atleast we will be able to splash on many players.

so looking at what we already have right now, Lucas and Gerrard (who is actuall better suited as an Attacking midfielder). we also have Spearing and Plessis from the reserves, which I believe only one of them would be counted as our 4th midfielder, possibly Spearing.

now for the newcomers, Cana, Martinez, Ilner, D'Agostino, Cattermole, and god knows who. it seems that Rafa will replace the "deeplying" playmaker style, into a more dynamic box to box midfielders who are both capable of attacking and defending at the same time. this kind of midfielders would give the attacking full backs better cover when they overlap.

as we are close to securing Negredo as Torres' backup, I would expect Rafa to buy a world class Left winger too, as he will now have the cash for it.

therefore, selling Alonso and Mascherano might be devastating, but we can always replace them.

My question now is for Dunk, from the reported names, who are the targets that are closer to Liverpool?

and which are more suited to the way we play ?

Agreed on Spearing... I really believe that if he's given a chance, he'll be a big hit...

Cana is not a better player than Monster and to say he is is a nonsense- if he was Real and Barca would be interested in signing him. He is a very good player and will offer the team something though.

However neither Xabi or Monster have gone yet.

What I am at least content about is that we seem determined to make Real and Barca pay over the value for both of them, first time I can recall us doing that. Usually we sell cheap so I'm glad Rafa is making them work for these signings and if they both stay I'll be happy.

Masch is better than Cana-he proved it twice last season in the champions league and Alonso is in a different league from Lee Cattermole, no disrespect to him.
We shouldnt be considering alternatives until they do possibly go but god help us if they do cos Lucas will be our first choice midfielder with Stevie G so id be thrilled if they stayed.

actually we do need to think about alternatives BEFORE they both leave. Alonso is the closest to the door, so we must find a replacement for him first.

there's nothing wrong in preparing for the most. in fact, good preparation might turn the bad scenario into a good one, depending on the replacements.

I believe would can leave. Not both.

Question is. Who's more important? They both play different roles.

I would probably select. Alonso over Masch. 30million plus for a defensive midfielder is a very good deal.

Ive seen a rumour going around that Esteban Cambiasso is being considered. Surely would be a good option short term. Especially as he has a year left on his contract at Inter.

Alonso is obviously the more important... their are alot of players who can break up play - MO Sissoko, both Diarra's the list goes on. For me their are only 2 other players in the world that can do what Alonso can do and thats Xavi and Iniesta so unless we're bought by Sheik Mohammed tomorrow we need to do everything we can to keep Xabi.

In my opinion two ready made replacements are waiting in the Sporting CP team by the name of Miguel Veloso or Joao Moutinho. Personally i would prefer Moutinho as you can never have too many leaders in a team.

Personally i think Alonso is gone. Hope i'm wrong but.... As everyone agrees the problem we have will be replacing 2 world class players. Wont be easy plus the selling teams will know we've money so we'll end up paying over the odds!
